Hi there folks! I am a new CBG builder and although it seems there is alot of readily available information on build techniques on this site and others, i was just wondering where you all stand on DVD's that are available. Are there any that come highly rated by anyone? I am in the middle of my first build of a fretless CBG and would also like to attempt fretted instruments and especially resonator models. If you more experienced builders and players can provide input on this subject i would very much appreciate it. Cheers.

  • I have found a lot of good info videos on you tube and I prowl around on the nation too much, some times it gets in the way of a build.lol The really great thing about cbg building is all of the experimenting that you can do on your own builds, you know what if I was too and bam you got some thing new or that just works out great!

just have fun while you learn and try some stuff regardless of if you learn it on here or on a dvd!

Hey jawbone, when you stand on your dvds they just skip? hmm mine shatter so the wife might be right about that weight problem she thinks i might have! LOL

    • Hey Jimbo - I'm sensitive!!! Don't mention my weight!! They only shatter because I have pointy feet!!!
Besides - I'm the perfect weight for 6'10"!!!!
      :-)

  • Hey Mark - welcome, eh!! I don't like to stand on DVD's - makes them skip!!! Oh man, I crack myself up!!!!!

If you are at all handy, you can probably figure most of it out, if not just ask - heck, you may find a better way!!!

I've never used any of the available dvd's but have looked at youtube and broused thru the wealth of information here.

You will probably make a few of these infernal contraptions and making each one a little different is half the fun.
    Good Luck!!

  • Some people like DVDs. However, as you note, there's a ton of absolutely free building info here and elsewhere. Josh Gayou has a freely available Advanced CBG Building PDF; Dan Sleep has some excellent fretting and neck building vids; many people here have purchased Mike Orr's and David Sutton's books; Chickenbone John has some great vids as well; BeetleJuice (John McNair) and I believe Bluesboy Jag, may have some building instructional DVDs for sale, if I remember correctly; and of course YouTube is a treasure trove of building and playing advice.

With all that available, and with the readiness of people here and at Ted Crocker's Handmade Music Club site to offer advice, whether asked for or not, I personally can't see spending coin on a builder's DVD. But that's just me...there's just so many freely available, interesting and creative ways to approach "the stick through a box," and Searching them out is half the fun. But I completely understand if you find that frustrating, time consuming, or otherwise un-fun.
  • I really like Dan Erlewine's videos from Stew-mac.
