Google "fruit crate labels" and select "Images" and you'll find hundreds of amazing label designs that would look great on a cigar box top. These are colorful, classic images that could customize the look of a CBG.

I'm always looking for unique cigar boxes and just stumbled across these images.

whats the best way to apply the artwork.  Would something like mod podge work?

It depends if you want to apply the actual crate label or just use the image. Gitty will print your image on the top of one of their box kits. This seems like a pretty good way to go. All you might need to do is apply some clear to protect it.

I prefer to have the crate label image printed out to the same size as my cigar box top. I then apply it with spray adhesive then usually apply some clear over this.

I think any way you might use to put a label on a surface would work fine.

You can do the same with Cigar box labels in the Google search

There are really a lot of interesting and artistic labels out on the net. Good inspiration for the next build.

Here is an example of a cigar box (originally a very plain white one) after wrapping the lid in a peach crate label image.

I printed out the image on some matte finish photo paper which is about as heavy as 3 x 5 cards. I made it about 3/4" larger than the box top. gave it a quick coat of clear poly to stabilize the ink, then used spray adhesive on my box top.  After very carefully position the box top over the image I let go and pressed it down a bit. I used the excess paper to wrap around the box lid to make it more secure.

Once the image was applied and rubbed down with a soft cloth I took a new Xacto blade and very carefully cut out the F hole opening and the pickup opening. Some antiqued corner protectors helped further secure the image to the top.

It turned out to be a good player and is eye catching too. Good way to dress up a boring box.
