Goin' To Townes: A CBG Tribute - Townes Van Zandt tribute album READY FOR DOWNLOAD!

Hey, y'all!  Your patience has been rewarded! The Townes Van Zandt CBG tribute album, called Goin' To Townes: A Cigar Box Guitar Tribute, which started as a mere idea here on CBN almost 4 months ago, is finally available for Download!

A double album's worth of Townes' songs interpreted by CBN Members from all over the world, including me here in Saudi Arabia, Thorsten Hinrichsen in Austria, Vinylhed in the UK, and people all over the US. Truly, a global effort! And all for free!

Download the album here:

http://downloads.cbgitty.com/cbnalbums/TownesVanZandt/Goin%27_To_To...

The zip file above has been updated to include Track 4, Dead Flowers, by Turkeychicken. Thanks to Dan Sleep for putting Track 4 in the updated zip file link above. If you are missing track 4 from the initial download file, please just download the zip file again. Sorry for the confusion.

I'd like to thank Ben Gitty for allowing us to host the album on the C.B. Gitty site, and for the opportunity to use CBN as a meeting place and idea exchange while we compiled the album.. I'd like to personally thank Dan SLeep for numerous e-mails back and forth, while we attempted to get the file from my computer in Saudi Arabia to the Gitty server, and then for him testing and birddogging the file for the last week or more. Thanks to John Maw in the UK for testing the download to make sure that it finally works.

I'd like to also thank Vinylhed (Hedley Brown), Uncle John (Bolton), turtlehead, SUGIMUGI (Thorsten Hinrichsen), RTZ, Jamie MacBLues, Russell Carlin, Cris Portillo, Jr., Ryan Sisco and the Crowne Towne Trio, Jimi Z, Ben Kepler, Letha Allen, Silent Jim, Lindo Cortez, Turkeychicken (Terry Chapel), and Jason Dean Anderson for contributing songs to this project, as well as the two Internet pickup bands put together for this project: The Profane Heaters (me, Vinylhed, his gf Louise, RTZ, Thorsten, Uncle John, turtlehead), and Uncle Ben's Perverted Rice (me, turtlehead, Thorsten, Vinylhed, and RTZ). This project benefited greatly from the dedicated mixing skills of Thorsten, Vinylhed and turtlehead. The album artwork was done by your's truly. Also included are lyrics to all of the songs in a Word document, in the order in which they appear on the track list, except Tecumseh Valley. This song appears twice, as Silent Jim and Letha Allen rendered two very different, but equally compelling, versions of the same song.

All songs were run through MP3Gain to equalize and normalize track volumes as much as possible, ue to the different recording hardware and software used by the various contributors. All tracks are in MP3 format, and have been tested on numerous computers, with both iTunes and Windows Media Player, on both Macs, iPads, and Windows PCs. Also, this album will be made available very soon for free download from MyTexasMusic.com, hosted by Lucky and Jinelle Boyd, who are thrilled to have this tribute album to promote Townes' music to new legions of fans. Lucky is a singer-songwriter himself, and knew Townes.

This has truly been a labor of love for me and my collaborators on this project. We had virtually no disagreements, respected one another's song choices and highly varied takes on them, and showed how the Internet can be used to fully collaborate on a project of this magnitude. I am proud to stand on my coffee table in my cowboy boots, and say that, while Townes Van Zandt may have been the greatest songwriter ever, the people who contributed to this project in ways large and small are certainly the best bunch of ne-er-do-wells one could ever hope to hoist a virtual beverage and a song chorus with!

Enough already. Enjoy the download, y'all!

Hi Strat,

Downloaded my copy, and am enjoying listening to it very much! Being so new, I only know to thank you for asking me to be a part of it, and seems RTZ was a big help in guidance too.I know it was hard work!  I am sure there are others I don't know of, plus the musicians, so I say to them, thanks for a great experience that made me feel welcomed here.

Letha

i just down loaded the  album, haven't had a chance to listen to one  song yet. i seen you guys going back and forth working on this, for what seems to be a long time now, i am proud to be a member of a site or have any thing to do with a site, like this one, where things like this album, are made possible , by friends and associates, collaborating, to produce something as a tribute and an offer to all to enjoy !!! i have to admit although i probably shouldn't, i did not know who the hell this man was, ofcorse i recognize his music  , and i do now know who he is, so for this reason and  because i am simply unable to cover anything  i did not seek to participate although  im sure it would have been a pleasant experience, so congratulations  to all who were involved in this project, and especially to the ones who worked so hard to make it happen !!!

Just downloaded it, haven't listened yet but I am sure it is great. Just one question. Did I not make the cut?? Lol, I don't see "Dead Flowers".  It looks as if it should have been Track 4???

Tc,

I'm gonna rectify that glaring omission later today. My most abject apologies! I noticed it when I downloaded it late last night. I KNOW I had it in there in the original mix, and it's a worthy inclusion; reason I know it was there is I included the lyrics! I copied and recompiled the zip file so many times from PC to memory stick to hard drive and back, fixing errors as I found them, that I must have inadvertently left it off of the last zip I sent Dan.

I can fix it a coupla ways. Easiest is to make a mea culpa announcement, and add it as a separate "Bonus" mp3 file to the download Discussion. Or I can ask Dan to replace the file with a new one that includes your take. This will take more time, but I'd actually feel better about doing it this way. It's really frustrating, because I was trying to be so danged careful, dotting T's and crossing I's, because I didn't want this to happen. I'm truly sorry. I will fix it.
No worries on my end, I know it was an honest mistake. I too saw it in the lyric sheet and I can only imagine what all you went through putting this project together. I would prefer the latter of the two fixes, for I don't care to have my song singled out, I am much more comfortable hiding in the mix, but you are welcome to fix it however you see fit. Heck, in all honesty, it don't really matter to me if I am on it or not, it was fun enough just doing it, and I have it myself to put with everyone elses songs in my file.

Let me thank you again for heading up this project, and please don't think that I was upset about being left off. I actually got a good laugh out of it, kind of felt like a "Spinal Tap moment". ;-)

I'll fix it both ways, if that's OK with you. My reasoning is this: I can get the single file out right now, when there arent; too many downloads, and people who've noticed a missing track 4 can fix their copy. Then I will send Dan the updated zip file, and come back, apologize profusely for my idiocy, and future downloads should be complete.

I'm glad you took it that way! Yeah, I felt like the Tap wandering around under the stage when I realized I'd left it off. And I was right; I found the file in another similarly named zip file on my notebook comuter, where I had applied MP3Gain. I also realized I hadn't converted it to mp3 format; it was still sitting there in the original WMA!

Doh! Live and learn, I guess.

HELLO CLEVELAND!!!

Well Homer that sucks, but its fixable and the world keeps spinnin.

As Townes would say   Don't take it to bad. By the way you guys did a great job mastering. Sounds killer.

Just email me the missing track, and I will dump it into the zip file and replace the one on the server.

Hehehe... just to throw my naivity out for all to see, I always thought that Townes wrote "Dead Flowers" and The Stones were the ones covering it!! All I know is that Townes version is the one that I heard first, so he had to have written it, right???

I have had a ton of fun participating in this project, can't wait for the Neil Young Tribute!

Never mind, I just noticed it was on this thread as an attachment. The zip file should be updated, let me know if there are any problems.

Dan,

I just sent you an updated zip file, just in case. I also just downloaded the zip file again, and it now contains track 4. Thanks Dan! I'll edit the Discussion, remove the red text, the Beatles cover, and the mp3 File.
