I'm working on a fretless with a solid dark walnut neck. I've never done markers or lines on a fretless before and am thinking about doing shallow slots and filling them with white chalk. I plan on finishing the whole neck with lacquer. Has anyone done this and how did it turn out?

Not sure about chalk but a couple similar things - Paint or stain the fretboard and saw slots lightly to show the original wood - or the opposite, create shallow slots and apply paint/stain, then sand the board leaving only paint in the slots.  Yours sounds more like the second one.  Maybe try a slot or two on a piece of scrap.

And a question back atcha, how would you apply chalk, is it powder or rub a stick of chalk over the slot or something else?  Just curious.

You could mix drywall mud with paint... Lay it in and sand it smooth..

try it on scraps. Somebody here used zip ties in saw cut slots...
