So like a lot here, I'm always on the hunt for cheap stuff to use in my guitar making. I was at the local Habitat for Humanity Re-Store this wknd. Looking for ild radios=amps, cabinet hdware, and I found a pile of laminent flooring. Most was crap but I found some with a top layer 3/32 thick. I picked about 6 sq ft worth and since it was 1/2 price saturday it cost me $2.00!! I have a HB Freight planner I abuse a lot so I ran this stuff through to remove the lacquer finish and the dark stain. What I found was probanly mahogany? A varity of colors and grains. I planed the back of one down to 3/16 thickness and sanded a little and did a quick coat of Formbys. I like how it looks so Im going to try one with frets to see how it turns out. This stuff would also make some nice boxes if your having trouble finding them. Far left with oil, far right original. For $2.00 I can play around. If I don't like it, I have a fire pit and and some hot dogs! ;-)

  • Near where I live we have a Lumber Liquidators flooring store. In the old location, they had some dumpsters for the flooring contractors to use. I would go by there every once in a while and dumpster dive for hardwood flooring to use for necks. Some really nice wood. The one issue is, you need a planer/joiner (I have a surface planer) to mill that wood down to something useful. Also, the pallets that the hardwood flooring shipped on is made from the same hardwood as the flooring. I have found cherry, oak, ash, maple, etc... I used to keep a small pry bar and hammer in the trunk of my car and go by there at night and tear apart the pallets.

    Happy hunting.

    • The nearest Lumber Liquidators to me is an hour away. Thats just too far away for regular scrounging. ;-)
  • Varnish smoke hotdogs????

  • $2.00 for that? Steal! Looks very nice.
