I have tried to figure out how they are able to sell stuff so cheap with free shipping. All I can figure is that the Chinese government is subsidizing the shipping to the US, for the purpose of putting the squeeze on US merchants... or that these sellers are just fronts for collecting valid buyer e-mail addresses, shipping addresses, and PayPal user account information.

Because the Chinese workers who make this stuff will work for something like 50 cents an hour. And because shipping costs are determined to a large degree by handling costs that aspect is also governed by similar sweatshop labor rates.

The only way you or I are going to be able to compete on those terms is to reduce ourselves to the appalling living conditions you find out there. That's free market capitalism for you...
  • Ted C is building some very nice looking low profile pups he's calling the Downunder:

  • One guy who recommended these to me says he cuts off the tab part and just glues it to the top of the box.

  • I remain a little lost on the mounting. If the single tab is intended to just be wedged under a pick guard doesnt that limit the number/style of guitars it would fit? Is it intended as a retrofit for acoustic guitars? I dont see it, but maybe I am dense. It doesnt seem like a good mounting option to me either way.

I'd like to see a low profile mag pup that mounts a little better/more conventionally, might use some in chrome. Working on a blacked out project, but probably well into the new year at this point.......

  • Ok, so how do you wire/set them up? Do they rake the place of a Piezo or used with them?

     Thks, TBKII

  • I'd definitely be interested in these, Ben. I've built four piezo guits and want to move on to mag pups.
  • Buying direct from Hong Kong can be cheaper, but it does carry a risk. Delivery is slow, and if there is an issue with the product (such as damage during shipping), trying to sort out a return/replacement can be very difficult, especially when trying to discuss it with a person who is barely conversant in English.

  • yea but 4 weeks delivery time from overseas. ben will contuinue to get my $$$$ i know if there is a problem he'll take care of it. thanks for the great service ben
  • Ben, I would think most builders here, or at least I would use the two tab style. Many more options for mounting than than the pick guard style.

Hey folks. I do have a source for these, if I moved on them I suspect I'd be able to offer them around $14.99 or so, or about $17 shipped. They are available in chrome, black and gold. Any thoughts on which would be best, if I could only get 1 style to start with?
  • Ben, They are great pickups - I'm not building for anything other than my own use right now, but I'd buy the occasional 1 or 2 . . . . color of the finish is unimportant to me. Thanks!
