first cbg

i already am hooked on buiklding my first cbg.  getting items together for build.  longest pc of 1x2 oak i have is 28" so i'll have to wait unless someone thinks a scarf joint to make a longer pc would hokld up.  i'm a fairly decent woodworker(just built our kitchen cabinets)and i'm home every day due to disability.  this new hobby(sickness) will give me something to do.  i don't play but love buyilding things.  woke up at 2 am last n ight and thinking of designs, who i'm going to give one to, and just could not get cbg's out of my mind.  i'm already consumed by these things and i'm sure i'll learn to play when i build the ione i know i'll keep.  any advicee will be greatly apperciated.  thanks and happy strumming

  • I'd look around the neighborhood and trash bins for a wood pallet. Cut one of those planks to make a 1 1/2 inch wide guitar neck. I might use a 32 inch long neck for my next build, 36 inches seems a little long.
  • I personally would not opt for a scarf joint for my first cbg, but that is up to you.

If you subtract about 4 inches to allow for the headstock, that leaves 24 inches. If you made a 17 inch scale uke, you should have enough neck wood left to attach to a medium sized box.
  • Mark,

A Scarf joint will work just fine and extend the length at least 4 more inches (depending on the scarf which I found this is about right). I have some pics on my page if you want to look. If you have Google Sketchup, I have some CAD plans available in my blog.

    Good luck.
