Hey all,

As a noob, I am eager to learn as many fingerpicking patterns as possible. I have about 3-4 different patterns just by fiddling around on my own, but was wondering if there was a resource for this? I have dug up a bunch of them on YouTube for 6-string, but on a 3-string, an arpeggio pattern and an inside-outside pattern are the same thing, LOL. So I was wondering has anyone made a video or anything on 3-string fingerpicking patterns? Don't know why, but right now I am enjoying the sounds of fingerpicking on my CBG moreso then hammering out chords...

  • Thumb. Two fingers. All you need. Thumb keeps alternating rhythm on top two strings, index and middle fingers alternately "gallop," depending on the notes you want to emphasize, and the style of music you wanna play. Sometimes, in a 1-5-1 tuning config, you pinch bass and treble together, as Jim has alluded to. As with drumming, you have to develop "feel." If you concentrate on left hand finger placement, in about 3 months, you'll find your right hand fingerpicking almost on auto-pilot. Don't overthink this; just...play. Play what you hear. Seriously. Your body will actually figure it out for you, if you surrender to it.
