Hi folks,

As i've finished my very first practice build, im progressing towards the next.

I wan't to make a 4 string.

And my question is:

Can i extend the headstock of a maple 2x1" neck with some pieces of other hardwood for visual effect, while still having enough support for tuners ?

I guess they will be screwed half into the maple and half into the wood extension on both sides.

Any thoughts on how to do that so it will hold ?

Could not find anything on this topic, or i'm just not that good with the search engine :)

  • There you go. Maple headstock with cherry head veneer extended by a piece of maple. The top tuner is screwed on both. The maple extension is glued cross grain so that you do not have end grain to end grain. Getting it clamped properly was not fun.

    • Ok thanks, think i'll go with that approach then. Seems to be very solid and looks great :)
Haven't even thought about a drilling template, but will try making one so the wholes line up perfectly each time.
Thanks a bunch for your input !
    • Thank you for your addition, looks really good. I guess i will have to get me some good clamps tor that :)

Will be fun to try out and see if i can make it work.

Do you by any chance know if i could also extend the width of the neck somehow ?

Those 2x1" from the hardware store sure don't leave much room for tuners.

      • You can easily widen the headstock, just glue/clamp some wood to the sides.  I use the cutoff from shortening the neck to length, split it in half and glue factory edge to factory edge.

        • Ok thanks, think i will try a bit of both then. Should be able to create some exiting patterns then :)

      • Take a look on that pic on how the tuners are set up. The headstock is about 6" long and the tuners are alternating. Also, I think the standard setback from the side is about 1/4". This is what the top tuners are. The tuners closest to the neck are as close to the edge as possible. This gives clearance forthe strings. I have set up a driling template for drilling.
