I'm thinking of building a double bass (upright). I had the idea of using an old roaster for the body (I know not really a cigar box), but I'm not sure I want to go with metal. Anyone one got an idea on what to use for the body? Preferably larger than a cigar box, yet wooden. Any suggestions would be welcomed!

  • Hi Bruce.

I have no personal experience of this, but I know that quite a few people have used wine boxes. I got a couple of water colour paint boxes which I intend to use to make bass guitars at some point and they are a bit bitter than cigar boxes, but I think you will get wine boxes which will be even bigger and give better proportions.

Good luck and look forward to seeing what transpires.

    All the best.

    • John,

I like the idea of the wine box too. I promise to document things once I do get started.

  • A humidor or maybe a cajon, it would be cool to have mutable snares.
    • Michael,

      Thanks for the ideas!
