and if so, how do we feel about this little palm one by Bosch:

I've been building for a little while, but never even felt like I'd wished I had a router. Besides the obvious rounding of the back of the neck, what is it for? Maybe this is a superfluous tool for CB lutherie.
I use a router for rounding my necks and making my boxtop/neck cutouts. Ot5hyer than that I dont need one but the time and strain it saves me rounding necks I couldnt give it up.
Wow! Much cheaper! Does being limited to 1/4" shafts make it less useful for small scale woodcraft?

Full size or this little tad?

you need anything smaller than this, I use a dremel tool. lots of choices for bits.

I have full size routers, dremels and a small router.
a small router and dremel will do everything you need to do.
I have the "H-F" model . My only compaint was I had to add a washer to the adjusting clamp to keep it from slipping in the middle of a cut . I've used the same "Bosch" model Wes mentions at work . The variable speed , ! hp , ease of adjustment , positive locking mechanism , availability of repair parts make the Bosch well worth the extra $$$ . To qoute Wes Carl "less hassle" . For routers , buy a good one . You'll enjoy it more and it'll last a long time . Happy shopping !!!
The 1/4" shaft is fine for this kind of work. Use a 1/2" if you're going to make cabinet doors. Just remember to take small cuts (kind of "sneak up on" the final radius), and practice on scrap. You can really bitch up a project if you don't know your router. Use good quality carbide bits with bearings on the end for rounding over. You will be amazed how much time you can save.

a router is probably not really needed for making cbgs, but when you have one, it comes in really handy for removing a lot of wood quickly. i use mine quite a lot for lots of jobs and it's a real good option to have.
but a word of warning, once you let these beasts go, they can do a lot of damage - be careful!
If you are going to pull the trigger on a router my favorite choice would be the small laminate type routers such as the one you linked to. That said, I've purchased two Porter Cable laminate routers used. One at a yard sale for $5 and the second at a flea market for $15. I already had a bigger one but at the price, I liked being able to leave a couple set up for the task at hand.

Unless you are using large bits for doing work such as doors and raised panels, I see no need for 1/2" bits. I do not use the router much with cigar box guitars. Its use is limited to truss rod slots on necks and cutting out "f" holes and pickups. On more traditional instruments, I do use one for cutting the slot for bindings on bodies and neck pockets.
Being a "newby" to the "CBN" community , I am impressed by the willingness of folks here to share their help/advice . as Merle said , "Don't really need it but removes material fast" is correct . When he says damage , he's also saying "QUICK" . After running a "really" big (2"-14" cap) planer for 16+ years , I was looking for a more traditional approach . Chiseles , hand crank drill , files ,.. All you need . The "first" CBG's ??? No electricity . Not being into production as such ,but more into the "BOX" , I kindly side with Turkish . I just wind up my old victrola and whittle away . Relaxing . The bottom line is what works for each individual and pleases you the most during the process/outcome is the best route to take . And as a "by note" , a copy of this reply has been sent to "Santa Claus" , 'cause i'm tryin' to be a good boy" , and I'll be lookin' for my new router under the Christmas tree :)
