I'm not sure if it matters if it's 3 or 4 string but what's the distance of the heaviest string tuner peg to the nut? I've never measured except between tuners themselves...thank you

It doesn't really matter Jon,most important is to make it as straight a line as you can to the line of the string, the sharper the angle from that line, the more likelihood you'll need string tee's,of course you don't want it that far that the string is too short,a normal '3 in a line ' tuner set is about 1 1/2 " centres,so 3" overall, add about 2" from nut to 1st key, makes it about 5" if your tuners are under,or 2" if your tuners are on top of the headstock.[by under or over,i mean as you look at the headstock from the front, like in the audience]

As long as you have spare string length to wind around the tuner's capstan you are good distance-wize.
On my Fender 6 string acoustic, 1.85", on the CBG I built, 1.3" (both measurements are nut to center of tuning peg).

that 2" i mentioned to the first tuner,is probably a bit short unless the string is real straight, but i've got many not much further
