Thought Id post this in the forum rather than bombarding Ted with more wiring headaches - Im sure lots of you guys will be able to help here, and hell, the rest of us might learn something too! :o) So I bought these 'bargain' Reflex Red active bass pups the other day. The intention is to use, individually, the 2 parts of the p bass pups (in seperate cbgs), then to split the J bass pup and use it staggered in a cbg = one purchase, 3 gits equipped with killer pickups... in theory! I dont need this wired up as nature intended, but thought the whole picture might help explain the set-up.... and I have a thousand questions! Id like to know how it was wired just out of interest - I can match up the blues and reds, but Im not sure about where the battery goes - is it the white and bare wires off the middle pot?? If not, what the hell are they for?? Incidentally, Seymour Duncans wiring diagrams dont look anything like this one!! Anyway, same goes for when I split them. Im thinking if I put the battery in the positive lead, that should work? Other questions that are niggling away at me... Why the brass and copper plates? And why are they wired? And shouldnt the copper one be wired to the J pup?? Currently there is only one wire off it. Iv been sat looking at these for a full day and I think the damn pups are winning... :o) Any help with one or any of the questions would be most fabulous and rewarded with beer where possible!!

  • Yep, I had a look at them Naz. I took from those that I can put the battery in the positive pup lead (I think), but I still cant suss out how this thing was wired - the only SD diagram has the blend wired totally different.

I guess its gonna jus be one of those mysteries....
  • Ah, ok then, thanks Skeesix! That seems to be one of the questions answered then :o)

The brass and copper plates are just shieding, and the fact that they are wired thru is only to ground them?

In which case the copper one prolly just needs grounding to the back of a pot.

Can you shed any light on the most pressing of my issues - ie where I put the battery??

    Many thanks :o)

  • Shielding needs to be grounded but not powered.
  • Thanks chaps - it is a bit of an unusual one aint it?!
The schematics are similair to the SD ones, but I can see anything with a blend pot into the bargain... though they do seem to suggest I can put the battery in the positive jack lead and it should work.

Mmm... never thought of the plates being shielding - but does shielding need to be powered? So many questions!!

With regard to the P bass pups John, just wire the 2 halves as you would a single coil - the cut wire becomes the 2nd wire if you see what I mean. Think of P bass pups as 2 single coils wired in series - all you need to do is seperate them :o)
  • That's got me baffled Ben...the brass and copper plates look a bit like the steel plate you get on the bottom of a Tele bridge pickup..but if indeed they are brass and copper, they may be there for shielding. I've avoided active pickups so far, as electronics isn't my strong point. The nearest you might find is the EMG 2 pu 2 vol 1 tine diagram on the above link...

By the way, I've just bought a pair of P bass pickups to play with...what do you do with the wiring once you've cut the link wire between them to get 2 separate p/ups?
  • I found this website and it has some good diagrams that are helpful for setting up your volume, tune, pickup and output jack:
