Cbg necks for sale

Hi all been building CBGs lately and been fun but so far only the broom handle variety but I want to build a fully fretted one! Now everything I can do at home bar the neck so anyone know where you can buy fully fretted necks that aren't too expensive as postage to Ireland is expensive enough?

  • Scruggy,i have no idea where you might be in Ireland,or if this can even help you,but in Australia, men's groups, some local councils run what they call 'men's sheds'where fella's can go for a bit of craik, and make stuff in a fully equipped workshop, might be something to look out for

    • as it happens there is one of those quite local but its only for retired men in there 60s so all i got to do is sit tight another 22years!lol

Pity the age thing though would have been perfect!

  • you need to check your emails john.

I sent you one the other day for an invoice for fret wire.

but I dont need the bass onces now bought some. but still want the others.

  • Well good on you Scruggy for accomplishing even the broom handle variety with no work space. I'd bet someone on CBN would be willing to make you a simple neck with frets and you could do the sanding and fitting to a box. Some generous folks here may do it just for the cost of shipping!

    • well scruggy if you can put the frets in the slots,I can do you a simple neck etc and just tell me how many strings you want so I can pre drilled holes for tuners unless you want to do them..

the only problem might be the postage cost as I wont send any thing without recorded delivery nor will I use couriers, dont trust them.

just pm me what you are willing to pay.

      • that would be great!

think 20 to 30 bucks i was hoping to get them for maybe more depending on quality! maybe 3 string! postage from uk wont be problen as iv a uk address they can be posted to!

        would you have any pics?

        thanks

  • Hey Scruggy,

If you're not wanting to DIY and just buy one, your best bet is Chicken Bone John. He is much closer to you...In UK, so shipping would be less than from this side of the pond.

    • Thanks for the name check...due to customer demand I've just started selling fully fretted and shaped necks....they are exactly the same as goes into my top line guitars, so they aren't cheap, but they are quality. I do a "bare bones" kit of parts including slotted fretboard, a "halfway house" glued up ready for  fretting and shaping, and a "full monty" fretted, with fretboard & edge dot markers, and fully profiled.  These are available in a range of 3 lengths to suit most cigar boxes (apart from the basic kit of parts, which can be glued and cut to suit).

    • I want to diy I like to personalise the CBG as much as possible so much prefer make as much as possible myself! Not that I'm not able just don't have best inviornment to build necks!
  • Hey Scruggy, good to hear from you. My suggestion is to be bold and reckless and cut your fret slots yourself into some 3/4" stock and try your own fretting. It's a little scary at first but you can figure out what scale length you want and then download measurements from a fret calculator. Then, with reckless precision, mark 'em and cut 'em! Some of my first attempts ended as kindling for the wood stove but you can use stuff like a piece of old shelf to practice on. Fret material is pretty cheap but bobby pins, finishing nails, even toothpicks have been used by some. I allowed my fear of failure to prevent me from doing this for a while and must confess that on my first couple of fretted builds I laid a factory guitar down alongside my workpiece and marked fret placement. It worked but was not as accurate as carefully measuring the placement. Either way, best of luck!
