You'll find different answers there to your question, depending on whether or not you've decided to go fretless slide, or with frets. If fretless, then typically your strings will sit pretty high above your fret board. If fretted, it depends on the action you are trying to achieve. Many people here will try to set the nut so that the largest string going over it sits roughly one string width above the first fret, while at the 12th fret, this height would be a little more than another string width above that. You will also find more exact measurements in fractions of an inch and / or mm in the Beginner's Group.
