  • I use a lot of bolt on necks for my builds, attaching them is easy enough, I use a length of wood down the box or tin to mount the neck and then wedge a second piece between the length and the lid to mount and brace the bridge, works for tailpieces, floating and fixed top loader bridges. The result is the box itself doesn't take any tension. I've use pine, ash and Mahogany for mounting, even used a length of pine for bolt P-Bass neck.1754678647?profile=RESIZE_710x

    • Thanks for the info. My main concern is if box bracing is needed to keep it from bending under tension. Will probably add a brace to be safe.

      • I hear you Mike, I have a few box's that are so lightly made I would not even consider them.

I put a small block inside the box and another outside the box [the heal] and use two bolts into threaded insert nuts. Both are knock down furniture fittings and available at your hardware store.

        • Thanks. May try that

  • I suggest to cut out neck plates from 1/4" thick wood. Or if you are a blacksmith, you can custom make your own plates because I never found metal neck plates for a cbg. I tend to make my own from wood.

Also, if you have a truss rod in the neck, helps to stay mindful of it when drilling holes to avoid chaos and terror.

All my builds have a permanent bolted neck. Not only do I bolt the neck, I use wood glue and epoxy to secure its stay. ;)

  • Hi, I use bolt or screw on necks almost exclusively. I do not feel bracing has any bearing on bolted or non bolted necks, Braces are more to do with top stability and/or top responsiveness.

But may be you are referring to the neck block and heal that are needed to make the neck a stable fit.

Their are no difficulties that I encounter, but then we do not all have the same tools and experiences, so it's hard to say what you may be up against. I use bolt on necks for 3 -4-6 string CBG's.

The CBG I am playing in my recent video on here is bolted neck and I make a brief feference to that feature, "playing a 4 string CBG".  I can post photos if you need more info.
