Blues Jam Special

I've been going to a blues jam recently. Last time I was there, I was trying to do some songs on the Cyclops (which is in open D), but they'd stuck me with a keyboard player who doesn't listen worth a damn and can only play in C anyway, lol. Total train wreck. I also noticed that I didn't need the richly toned bass strings on the Cyclops while playing with a full band. But I do need a volume control on the guitar (which I don't have on my usual stage guitars.) So I build this Blues Jam Special... 4 strings in open C (CEGc); Hand wound EM pickup with volume control; frets; bolt-on neck... pretty much built it in a weekend. This thing is loud, acoustically - I was surprised at how loud. Unfortunately, the pickup won't cut it - not enough volume overall and too short to get the 1st string at all. Well just have to wind another - ten days till the next blues jam.

  • Doc, that pick-up works great....sounds real nice.
  • Glad you asked... Just recorded some (attached). This is a line-in from the EM pickup with no effects.

  • Here's a profile view with the new pick up on it:

  • Sounds like fun, Doc. It's something I miss; we used to all hang at an open-mic club and then adjourn to someone's place for more picking and grinning after hours.
Since the place closed and all have gotten older.... Not so much anymore. Love to find a few folks to jam with occasionally.
  • The guitar looks great, Doc. I love seeing your new builds.
  • Since we're a cross-cultural group here, there may be some folks who don't know about blues jams... When you go to a blues jam, you sign up with the host and then they put you on stage with other folks you may never have played with before... and you play a set with that pick-up band. It can be very exciting (in both a good and bad way, lol).

The one I've been going to is at the same venue where I also host an open mic. Very nice little place, and, at the blues jam, we actually get people who come just to dance to the music. That's very cool.
