  • I used a lipstick pickup on my 3-string.  No problems with pole alignment and it sounds good.  You can get them for £7.50 on eBay or Amazon.  For a 4-string bass, you'll need the longer lipstick pickup, which isn't as common.

Did you get a bass amp in the end ?

    • I did but it wasn't working properly so took it back for a refund.

I gave the git to my son.

I'm not really interested in a Bass git.

    • Think I might have misread the question - you're thinking of using a bass pickup in a standard 3-string, not a 6-string pickup in a 3-string bass.  Oh well, they all seem to work in any application :-)

  • I have used the 6 string pick up,and it works beautifully.

so called chinese rubbish as some say but I've used 3 chinese made pickups and so far no problems.

sure I'd buy off gitty but postage is a killer,by the time you add postage it comes £18.00 which is £5 more than the other ebay seller.

the 6 string pick up cost just under £4.00 inc shipping.

that is why I ask about the bass pickups.

    • for 4 quid, unless you absolutely hate it,go for it

,you can always mount those 6 ers under the soundboard and put extensions up to suit for visuals

  • Bass pups are readily available for a relatively low price, and are fine for cbg's. If you look at photos of how bass pups are setup in relation to the strings, most modern bass pups are aligned with the strings passing in between a pair of magnets/pole pieces, rather than each string resting above a single magnet/pole. The bass pups can be setup for 4 strings, with the strings above the magnets. Or, for 3 string builds, the strings can sit in the 3 spaces between the 4 poles.

Difference in tone? Never know until you try. I've used them on 4 stringers with great success. Go for it.

  • the cheap p-bass pups that Gitty and others sell are a very good/cheap intro to mags for c b g's in my opinion John, only issue is if you want to change up,you've a bit of a hole to fill. You can easily mount them below your sound board and put ferrous metal extensions through the board though
