  • Hey everyone Im Steve from Brisbane and I've just started building my first CBG after I bought a Thorley CBG at the Eumundi Markets on the Sunshine Coast. Will be posting some pics soon !
  • there's a great source of cigar-boxes locally -- a Cuban Cigar & Coffee Salon with boxes piled metres high. $5.00 and $10.00 each. If anyone needs any . . .
cheers & beers (XXXX in my case, and as an Australian you'll know I'm not trying to kiss anyone!)

Got an address/phone umber for the cuban cigar/coffee shop for Cigar boxes please? The silly thing is that i was in Brisbane a few days ago!
  • Hi I am Brian From Cooranbong NSW (Lower hunter)
Just collecting resources for a CBG 3 string. I used to play guitar before losing a good bit of my left hand middle finger! I am hoping that open string/slide will get me back in again?

Cant find a Cigar Box....Bought a "book box" from "Reject" today. I think it is MDF. It is the nearest i have found to a cigar box so far. My first will be acoustic so I think a better "lid" for it will have to be found. ( I have some cedar) If i get a pick up and an amp the MDF might do (?)

Is there an Australian Cigar box source?

Really interested in building a reso/Dubro type CB guitar. Looking for DIY bits for that. What do you do inside the box if you want a central sound hole for a biscuit bridge?

I suppose I have a lot of questions, though i have made dulcimers and all sorts of other folk instruments.
Tried to join the Oz group but computer does not bring up the right thing!

OK, I will keep you in touch with progress.
  • Great to finally make contact with my fellow builders in Australia.
Feel free to ask me any questions as i am currently finishing CBG#30.
I have tried all the standard scale lengths and am now delving a little deeper with cello and other string instruments scale lengths as a reference (pics soon to follow).

I am keen to show the quality of australian workmanship :)
    Cheers mate

    G'day Will,
I'm in Melbourne and I'm onto number 4 CBG. So far I've made one 23" scale fretless 4 stringer that's been rebuilt about four times, a 24" fretted four string and two 21" four string fretted (one might become frettless soon) as travel instruments. The small ones fit into a mando soft case so you can carry them on to flights.
My main aim is to make acoustic models in the spirit of the old boys. ie few tools, little sophistication and a bit of luck.
I'm having fun just messing about with variations on a theme really and let's be honest, who can resist the call of the electric. I've never wired anything before so I'll be needing all the help I can get.
I'll have to get around to taking some photos.
You have some interesting models on your profile.
    Cheers,
    Rod.
  • Hi :)
Just found this site, Im about to start on my first CBG in the coming weeks.
planing on making a 3 stringer to start with.
As I work in a carpenters dhop, Im a bit spoiled as far as most of the tools needed.
    But the box.....
    To RossCrow,
I would love more info on the boxes, Im in Newcastle NSW, but have mates in Brissy,
so I can sort out getting them to me ;)
  • G'day from Brisbane.
I'm on a fast learning curve of learning to play a few fretted instruments (bass, guitar, cuatro, ukes ... ) but haven't started building yet. I guess I'll be the designing and materials acquisition part of the casual partnership I'm forming with a couple of other Brisbane guitarists. By the way, there's a great source of cigar-boxes locally -- a Cuban Cigar & Coffee Salon with boxes piled metres high. $5.00 and $10.00 each. If anyone needs any . . .
