I would like to play with building little amps for fun. I've been looking around at options for pre-wired circuits. I'm finding several in the 1-3 watt range, like the Gitty one here and others, and then several options 15 watts and up, but little to nothing in the middle, 5 - 10 watt range. Where am I not looking?

  • I ran into similar issues when I started building amps.

First be sure to know all there is to know about amps and components so you don't harm or kill yourself.

Little 1watt to 5watt amp kits are plentiful because bigger ones get expensive quick. Some of the 5watt to 10watt amps are just 2 smaller amps in stereo to avoid Class labeling and limits to builders.

Once you learn how to read schematics, you can often find one for a amp you want to build. Then you can find the components from supply houses and build it yourself. Tube amp kits for 15watt and up to 100watts all over the internet. A 15watt tube amp with 12" or 15" speaker is loud enough in my house to be heard all over my street. They are plenty loud. If your building for stage/gigging amp, a line out(for soundboard) and an extension speaker will work for most needs. 30watt and up if you need more.

Some of the already made amp prices are so low these days that it hardly makes sense to build your own. I can get a Boss Katana 50watt Solid State amp with 5 built in effects and presets for less than $250USD. You can spend that much on the transformers for a amp build.

  • Try eBay for a TDA7297 amp.  Under $3 if you can wait for a China shipment, $5 from the U.S.  Watch the listing as some are kits.  It claims 15w but it doesn't put out much in my opinion.  Other TDA amps out there too, for example TDA2822m claims 5w, never tried one though

    • I have one of those coming.

      • you might need a preamp for these. the premade amp boards all seem to require line level input.

  • Tone Monster stuff is way too expensive for my purposes.

  • Tone Monster MAH5

    • Not really interested in building my own circuits just yet. Looking for pre-wired. I'll think more about some of those on ebay which would need just a little extra wiring.
