Again: Can a Bass Guitar Mag Pickup be used on a 4-stringer CBG with good results?

Hi All...

I have been wondering if I can use the 4-string magnetic pickups
designed for a Bass Guitar on a 4-stringer Cigar Box Guitar?  Would it
produce the same quality sound as for a 6-string guitar mag pickup?  Or,
is it designed to produce a lower bass range signal? I'm not looking to
make a Cigar Box Bass. Here's a link to something on E-Bay like what
I'm talking about: E-Bay Link

This one seemed reasonably priced.

I don't see why not.
All a mag does is pick up the vibrations that is produced by the strings and turn them into an electrical signal.
A bass or regular electric pick-up all do the same thing, the same way.
The only difference..... on works better on certain frequencies that the other does.
Now, MOST cbg's have a trebbly sound due the the lack of volume of the resonator. A bass pick-up will work to enhance the bass in the note, therefore it will give a fuller ( better to some ) tone.
In fact, I prefer use a bass amp when I play my cbg's.

And I will probably use a bass pick-up if I ever decide to used mags.

Thing I like about bass pickups like these is you can either use two together as humbuckers, or use them as single pickups. two pickups for the price of one. I use them in my electric solid body ukuleles.
Don
they used one half of two.

So lets say you use one of these: "Ok, you use one of these!"

[Grin] Enough sillyness. So could you use one of the two as a pup even if you use it for 6-string pickups? Very interesting. -WY
The only problem would be spacing , some not being centered over a pole piece therefore being a weaker signal as a result.

Hmmm. Lemme rephrase. What I mean is can you use the 4-string bass pup in lieu of a 6-string pup on a 4 string CBG? Matt mentioned the frequency response of a bass to 6 string pup. Is there any real measurable issue using the bass of 6 string pup? -WY

AAARGHHH ... sucked into a quote-vortex.
I just purchased 2 sets of these off Ebay....actually one set but they sent me 2 sets so I ended up paying about $2.25 US a piece ......out of China or was it Japan, Hong Kong?.....They'll work fine...one could even mod them so the ploe spacing doesnt matter........I went this way instead of winding my own, for now................Mike..
Thanks, guys. What a speedy set of responses. What I thought was a dumb question seems to have been useful to a couple other folks as well. I'll see if I can get a hold of a couple and test them out as well.

Sincerely,

-Rand.
See. Good things do happen.

I've used a cheap p-bass pickup on a 3 string and found it perfect - BUT I mount the pickup under the lid and extend through the lid with a steel bar to just under the strings. Also works well with a 6 string pickup mounted the same way - such as the cheap ones shown on this ebay site (
CLICK here for site) These are good because you get everything prewired including volume and treble controls and jack. John D

Here is a 3 string with a p-bass pickup uner the lid - note steel bar.

PS if your looking for cheap jack AND mounting plate try these ( at this LINK) only $ 3.80 AUS (US now similar) AND this includes POSTAGE !!!

Why would your want to use one? cost and/or bass response.... How would your accomodate a six stringer with a 4 string pup? tune the 4 string pup into a "rail" pup by adding an appropriate length of Aluminum or steel over the top of the poles of the pickup.... been there done it, it works... the best, Wichita Sam
