A simple little box, a stick and a string.  Something about it "resonates" with people.  (No pun intended.)  It''s a wonderful thing.  And funny  . . . when I first reveal to people I meet, that I build and play cigar box guitars, more and more I find myself almost immediately mentioning something about there being an "online community of thousands" like-minded people.

When I think about it, I suppose I do that to quickly try and assure folks that I'm not some kind of crazy unabomber type (ha ha).  There is strength in numbers, after all.  And with 5,000 members in sight, I was just reflecting on what an amazing thing we have here in the nation!

Thank You, Mr. Speal for staking out this little corner of the internet for us.  You have done nothing less than spawn a worldwide culture!  Not to overstate things, but I know that this has transformed people and changed lives.  Anybody want to talk about what THE NATION means to them?

  • I'd be happy to pay for a commemorative t-shirt if we can get this graphic incorporated into it.  I've campaigning for this one on a shirt since 2500 members. :)

  • Will there be free commemorative t-shirts for all 5000 members?
  • Shane,

I have allways said about you, you are a man with a vision. Keep it up, others now see to. :)

  • whoa...
  • Shane,

thanks and congrats... I am not overstating it when I say that CBGs have been life changing for me.  I have experienced a release of creativity that has had be building, playing, performing, writing and doing art.   All things that I would never have done with the non-threatening vehicle of CBGs and encouragement of so many of the good folks in the CBG community.

What you have done will have echoes for years and years to come over hundreds/thousands of people.

    the best,

  • Lots of fancy words, but it all comes down to two core things.  Inspiration and friendship.

    Thanks ya'll.

  • I have a passion for music, and I have had it since I was four years old and first heard Ray Charles singing "Busted".  But, I never got any support from my family or my ex.  Started playing guitar over 30 years ago, and tried my hand at singing in public about 10 years ago.

Still, while some of my friends sympathize with my passion and desire to express myself through song, I think they see it as a novelty.  They don't share the passion, so they don't really understand.

Here, everyone involved is in the same state of passion I am in.  A lot of you have a lot more talent (for building and performing, as well), but I think we are all on the same page, beneath it all.

So, for me, the nation is almost like coming home.  Thanks for taking me in, so readily.  I just joined a couple of weeks ago, and posted up a few videos.  I have gotten some great constructive criticism, and I have been quite flattered by the attention that my songs have gotten.

  • Gettin' close!

A strange and wonderful marriage in deed:  The high tech of the web and the lowest of low tech:  A cigar box guitar.
