I have moved house, I have a smaller workshop and now want to get building again, so I got myself a pile of parts and I'm going to build a nice little 2 String thing. Couple of questions.

1. What would it be called, its going to have a smallish Biscuit Tin for a body, so is it a Canjo or a Diddley Bow or a Cigar Box or something else?

2. Heres a parts list, am I missing anything?

A Smallish Biscuit Tin in the shape of a Teddy bear (a gift from one of the girls at work, she wants to see what I make of it), A long piece of Pine (40mmx40mmxat-least-1M), 2 steel bolts, 1 25mm Piezo prewired to a jack, 2 Machine Heads, a Brass hinge with 2 mounting points for strings, some screws and 2 strings (17 and 26 gauge).

3. My workshop is my small and full of stuff from the move, any advice on working in confined space (Can't work outside, we have snow for the first winter in years).

  • A 2 string is still very FRED.

    • FRED?

      • A previous thread discussion what to name a git, and we degenerated into a spiral about calling it Fred, and has become something of a running joke now...

        • makes sense, I must of missed that one.

          Definitely not calling it Fred.

Bear Tar seems like one of the better options, but honestly, the naming of it will be down to the new owner once it is no longer mine.

  • Updates people, I have a massive supply of wood, just come in so my build can begin very soon.

Also, I have changed my choice of strings, going with a 26 and a 36 gauge (AD) going to tune the A string down to G for power chord playing with a slide.

Might make a second one afterwards or maybe a Diddley, I seem to only make these things for other people, never actually owned one for personal use

  • Smoky the Bear-tar

    • maybe not smoky, but I like Bear-tar

  • Tin Ted Too

    • Tin Ted could work. I will admit since I am making this thing right handed, its not for me so the name will ultimately be chosen by the new owner

  • I think Shane coined the term 'chugger' for 2 string builds. They're a ton of fun to play. I've made a couple, and I really like them. I tune mine to A, D.

I hope you can work out a comfortable way to manage your new space. My only tips are to keep it picked up as much as you can, and bright lighting might help so you don't feel like you're in a cave. When a small space gets messy, it can be really uncomfortable to work in.
