I'm building a fretted license plate Bass for a friend...  I need a suggestion on a pickup that won't break the bank...

Opinions on:   GFS Music Man pro plus?   Seymore Duncan Passive soapbar neck phase II?

I figure 2 string, 30" scale...   Solid body with a license plate, Maple neck, hardwood fretboard (probably Jatoba)...  Jumbo frets..

All suggestions welcome.

I might suggest clicking the link above or to the right for 'good and affordable" mag pup

  • I haven't used or heard any of those choices. But if your looking at Seymore Duncan for around the same price you can get the Quarter Pound P bass. They are very punchy and expressive. I have a set. If you're looking for a more traditional sound you could go Fender. Plenty of used pickups on Ebay.

The reason for the price difference between some off brands and named is quality control. Named brands insure each pickup is going to sound exactly like. Brands like Mighty Mite, Dragonfire, Guitarfetish and the like have good pickups. However never go real cheap for a bass. A thin nasally bass sounds really bad.

I got a set of really cheap P bass pickups off of ebay. Cut them apart and put one in a  4 string CBG. Only two strings made noise. Only half of the pickup was wired. Live and learn.......
