1st Acoustic Build

This will be my second build and thought I'd try an acoustic this time.  Still trying to decide if I like the IBC Root Beer caps pick guard or not.  Leaning towards not.  Any advice for bracing the inside or not or any other advice is always greatly appreciated.  Anywho... Thanks for lookin!

  • Ditto on not building on the marble! Good Catch Rand!

  • Looks great. Personally I'd go w/o the caps. I think you are gonna need sturdy brace of some sort to hold that neck with 6 strings or have an implosion.

  • Very nice build.  Add me to the no bottle cap side.  Big fan of root beer I see.

As to bracing.  You can do x bracing like a traditional acoustic with some thin strips of soft wood like cedar or what you can come up with.  Even just a couple of angled strips like this.

305966222?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024Make sure you have a good clean surface to glue to and you should be good.

    • Thanks guys. I think I have decided against the boot caps. I don't drink anymore so yes, I do like the root beer. Still unclear on the bracing. A I doing that on the top or bottom and is it just for support or does it n case the sound? Thanks again for the help!
      • Roky,

Bracing goes on the underside of the top. It is designed to do a couple things: provide support to a thin top, and increase the resonance of certain frequencies by inducing resonating nodes into the top. With the relatively small surface area of a standard cigar box, this may or may not make a discernible difference in tone.

Oh, and I vote a strenuous no bottle caps anywhere on that build! The box, neck and headstock are just too elegant. At best, design a simple black / white / black rosette for your sound hole. How are you on inlay?

        • Thanks.  That helps a lot!  I may do a little something under there.  No bottle caps it is!  I think I'll finish it up and then decide on a pick guard (if any).

I do appreciate a good inlay.  I also like to outlay, overlay, and underlay :)  Kidding!

If you are asking how I am on doing it?  I don't.  I purchased the neck from Guitar Fetish.  $50.  I'm just starting out on the whole building thing so I'm starting small.

Thanks again for all the help!  I enjoy learning these things from you guys!

  • nice    ..

  • I hope you are not building on top of that beautiful marble counter-top. If so, I'd advise clamping a large piece of 1/2" thick  plywood on top it, or you'll end up ruining it one of these days. And if your married, your wife will probably skin your hide for doing it. Just a tip to the wise...
