I wonder what people think about putting the volume knob on the top side of the box rather than through the lid. Seems like the knob can get in the way when strumming, especially with a smaller box. Most people seem to put the knobs on the lid, in the corner near the bridge.

related question: if the side or the lid is too thick for the potentiometer shaft length, is it better to remove some material to thin the wood, or just buy a pot with a longer shaft?

Hi All,

I am about to start a 6 string resonator.

How do I lay it all out so the scale length is perfect? I guess its even harder with a cone as you can adjust the intonation?

Do I chop and fit the neck with rough dimensions and then measure when in place?

Any help would be great!

I recently did some work on a six string cbg. The bridge was free floating, and I forgot to mark it’s sweet spot beforehand. Now, I want to put it back, but have no idea where to place it. Does anyone have a trick to find the scale length from spacing of the frets? I’m hoping for a reverse fret calculator or something. Nut to 1st fret is 33 mm (1 1/4ish inch) . nut to 12th is 30 cm (11 7/8 inch)

I would really like to use regular round-wound bass guitar strings (not the ones that are made for upright bass), But there is a catch, I am not sure if they are gonna be long enough for this, cause scale length is 39.40 ¨ and I will probably need additional 2-4 inches for winding those strings, so required string length would be around 43.5 inches. I don't know how long are bass guitar strings when you take em out of package, as I never measured them before, and I don't have any laying around to check that, although I'm think they are not that long.

So if anyone has some ideas how to find such strings or if anyone makes those please help, required string gauges are 0.120 for low B and 0,060 for high b.

Thanks for ideas.
Tuning and set-up issuestag:www.cigarboxnation.com,2014-04-22:2592684:Topic:19709842014-04-22T03:19:06.006Zbrdfrdhttps://www.cigarboxnation.com/profile/BradFord
I finished my first (4 string) CBG and it seems to have gone pretty well. I strung it up and tuned it to open G, with strings I got from Gitty for open G/standard. I figured out there are 2 open G's, and have it tuned to the correct one: DGBD.

So, here is the issue. It sounds great strummed open, but finger any fret on any string and I can't get it to hit on the right note. I've checked the scale length and the position of the 12th fret multiple times, and they're spot on at 24" and 12"…

I've checked the scale length and the position of the 12th fret multiple times, and they're spot on at 24" and 12" respectively. I've also moved the bridge in both directions, a little at a time and retuned.

Initially, I thought I had the strings too high and was stretching them too much when fingering against the fret. I was able to drop the bridge about 2mm, and the slots in the nut about 1.5mm, and it's easier to press the string to the fret, but I still have the same issue.

Is it possible the strings are crapped out from being stretched/adjusted too much? Are these strings from Gitty not ideal, since they seem to be a "one size fits both"? I realize the high string is only one full note difference, D instead of E, so it shouldn't be too far off--and that has no bearing n the other 3 strings. Any thoughts or advice?
hi everyone
I'm new to building (on my 3rd right now) and I want to build a cigar box guitar in every tuning. I have my first 2 tuned to G5 and was wondering wether scale length had anything to do with tuning to all keys?? is it better to change strings or to change scale length instead??

For starters, there have been problems in the past with videos that just stop playing and get hung up in "buffering". This was reported to Ning support, but they were never able to resolve the problem.

For videos that you upload directly to your page on Cigar Box Nation, there is a file size restriction of 100MB. While this may seem like a pretty big file, you can easily exceed that file size if you have video in high definition, like 720p or higher. For example, on my iPhone 4, 30 seconds of 720p video results in a 40MB file size.

When you upload a video to your page, the Ning servers convert it to Flash format automatically. Converting to Flash format increases rather than decreases the file size.

What is interesting is that Ning says the 100MB file size is the maximum size AFTER they convert it to Flash format. So, that sounds to me like a user cannot upload a 100MB file because it will automatically exceed the file size limit. In fact, a 75MB file may exceed the limit after conversion. Basically, the user has no idea what the final file size will be, so they just have to try to upload it and hope for the best.

In my opinion, the best option is to upload the video to YouTube first, and then post the embed code on your CBN page. After the video has been upload to YouTube, click on Share, then click on Embed. Tick the box that says "Use old embed code", and copy the code that is in the window.

Then, on your page here, click on Videos, then click on Add, but DO NOT click on the big red box that says Click to Add Videos. Instead scroll down to the bottom of that page and click on "or embed videos from other services".

You will then see a box where you can paste the code that you copied from the YouTube site. Then click on Add Video and you should be good to go.

Just remember that if you remove that video from YouTube, it will no longer be available on your CBN page.

Enjoy.

So Dude calls the strings on the non-business side of the bridge "afterlength." He goes on to state that it matters on violins but speculates that it does NOT matter on banjoes. So I wondered about CBGs! Well, that sure puzzled me! I decided to put it before the nation.

Has anyone expressly experimented with the string length on the short side of the bridge? What lessons can you share?

Uh... I can see this migrating to a discussion of bridge position. I think bridge position is addressed in the CBN archives, so I hope to see a focus on the afterlength. Let's assume a fixed scale length and bridge position at "about a third of box length from end" or whatever you prefer. I think your only options are to either stretch the box or extend the tail piece (or long through-neck - same thing, right?).
