Original tune played on a rescued 6 string Chris Adjustomatic parlor guitar and a plugged-in 4 string cbg. This is based on a true story. I did sit next to a girl named Eve on a flight and she certainly had blue eyes and was coming from a job interview. She may or may not have killed someone. She never said...

Thanks again for the help, Ron. Really appreciate it. I just meant saving me money buying the 58 to then realise I should have bought the 57. I know what I'm like and I would have paid again for the 57 just because it's the "right one" even if the 58 was perfectly serviceable with a little knowledge lol. Again, much appreciated. Saving for Boxstock festival at the end of the month right now so won't be able to get one just yet but forewarned is forearmed, as the saying goes.

Dani and Bear,

Oh, you won't save any money buying an SM 57 versus an SM 58. They are both around $100. I have two of each in my stage arsenal, just in case. They are incredibly rugged, and will literally last for 20 years or more. It's just that the SM 57 does a better job recording instruments and amplifiers, while the SM 58 is primarily for vocals. You can use it for instruments, but it requires finicky placement to get it just right, and the SM 57 is a better all-arounder.

Jim has a good point about unusual voiced singers, Bear. Dylan's voice changed after his motorcycle accident, but he still sings with emotion when it calls for it.

Great info Ron and Turtle! I use Audacity and a Blue snowball usb mic for multi-tracking. Would like to upgrade to a newer computer and some additional recording software and gear eventually, but I am pretty cheap as well!

Thank you John van der Valk! I liked the alliteration and the "sound" of the line Eve is on an airplane, so I wrote it down before I forgot it. Then used it later when I was in a writing mood. Thanks again for listening and commenting!

Thank you Turtle! I appreciate your kind comments. I do like making more complete recordings now and then and hope the dubbed in stuff doesn't change the song too much the wrong way.

Thanks Ron. I'll have a look at the SM 57 instead of the 58 then. Thanks for saving me a lot of money buying the wrong one.

Thanks, Jim. If I sing softly then I can usually get away with a sound that's not too bad. It's when I try and sing loud, with vagusto, or however it's spelled, that I trip up. Years and years of being a heavy smoker I guess. I can't carry a tune to save my life and if you asked me to hit a certain key I'd have no idea where to go. Take a leaf out of the old blues legends' books me thinks. Sing some of the words, let the audience mentally put the rest in, don't worry about the tune and just concentrate on the emotion. Something like that anyway. Thanks for the encouragement. Much appreciated.

Bear, I don't know near as much about mics as most of these other guys but I'll add my 2 pence worth about vocal quality. Your self described "nails on chalkboard" voice is not really a bad thing. Unusual and unique voices are one of the things that make music interesting!  Here are a couple of my fave nails on chalkboard singers

For Bear (and anyone else) on mic she and mic placement:

I have done a lot of recording, both solo and in band settings, have mixed sound for myself and other bands, and have learned a lot about miss and mic placement, while also having used various Miss onstage for theatrical performances. Here's what I know:

Tie clip mice are a PITA. They need to be placed just so, and often do not work well with certain timbres of voice, without lots of sound reinforcement / EQ fiddling. Hate em. For both vocals and instrument recording out simply can't go wrong with a Shure SM 57. Notice, not the SM 58, which, while I've used it to record instruments, is primarily a lead vocal mic, which needs to be sung into up close and pushed hard. The SM 57 does a great job of recording with no coloration. I also heavily use an iRig through my iPad, GarageBand, AmpliTube, and Audacity. There are comparable Miss for Android tablets. The iRig has three settings which change the shape of the response envelope of the mic, depending on what you wanna do with it. I can also highly recommend the various Blue USB mics, having used them for recording PSAs as well as music.

Thanks again, Turtlehead. I feel the Shure mic still won't make my voice sound any better. I have a voice like nails on a chalkboard lol. Still, at least by getting a Shure I can't blame my tools and the fault will lie with me and me only.
