I've been trying figure out how to simulate distortion effect FOR MY ACOUSTIC CIGAR BOX GUITAR--without electrifying it! Any thoughts, beyond creating cracks in the wood?

Yeah, and this is not a joke or smart*** comment: put something in that will vibrate or some sort of resonator with something on it that vibrates. Bad description, so I will say something like a tambour inside. Over the skin/membrane, pass a string with a bead on it. That should create some sort of "distortion". A buzzing sound and might even create a neat "tone" too.

Oooo, ooo, ooo. A cross stitch hoop with stretched parchment paper for the membrane.

Keep this in mind, I have never tried this but the physics sound solid. Think of a Kazoo. Something like that. Cracks or some sort of vibrating wood pieces might to as well. Think of a woodwind instrument reed principal for this.

I even bet you could put in some kind of spring to give it a reverb effect. There are some kids toys that use a spring to simulate a reverb and I think some piano's use something like a spring to give reverb.

Now that I think of it, that sounds really interesting..... Hmm. Hey Ya'll, my idea ;-) !
Yeah, Have him explain that one at a gig .

Use a vibrator as a slide or even a bridge.

Heh, that would depend on the bar: in some joints, that would be a real crowd pleaser.

HA HA HA. right.

Wife: "Hey honey, Um, this came today from.... Adam and Eve? Is there something we need to... Um... discuss?"
Husband: "Oh no sweetie, its for my next gig. I'm gonna make this guitar sing."
Wife: "Right. Uh huh. And your next 'gig' is where? The Moonlight Bunny Ranch?"

BTW - I wouldn't use the terms 'vibrator' and 'excite the strings' in the same sentence ;-)

It doesn't have to be that huge thing your wife keeps hidden in the bottom drawer. I found a small vibrator not even as big as a lap steel to see how it would excite the strings. It didn't really work well as a bridge but as a slide it can really produce some nice ghost tones. If it's placed near the magnetic pickup it generates feedback which is easily controlled.
Don't laugh...

You could always attach a set of snares from a snare drum to the underside of the top. They run about $5 to $10 at any music store.
How about a paint lid with some sort of drum snare or tinsle type material mounted inside the box under the bridge.
Or a small drum head from a bongo with something to rattle on it. I'd love to hear it when you figure it out.
Thanks. I'll let you know if I decide how to do this.

yea but I wonder if that will only make it buzz and rattle more than distort. there's lots of ways to make it buzz, like using a shorter, metal bridge. but to actually get distortion i think it will take more than a snare like set up and closer to what Wes Yates said. I would take a look at that stuff to really get a cool effect.

Maybe tin foul? Ir adding tin foil around the fret board? That would distort it some I think.
A door spring or two.
