Hey all and thanks for your time. I've seen a double neck guitar on eBay and decides they look cool. I'm thinking about building me one but I'm at a loss about what you do with them? I mean, would you usually change key in the middle of a song? Are they supposed to be for two sets of three or four strings just in different keys? Am I better off having a three and a diddley bow on one body? Would that be more use or less use when playing than say two sets of four? I want to have one as something new in my collection but what are they for? BTW, this isn't a dig at them, I'm asking because I don't know the answers. Please someone help me justify the cost with more reason to have one than they just look cool. Please?

Thanks again for your time.

Make one that is both a guitar and a mandolin.

This is a good option because a mandolin is tuned to fifths. This gives a whole different sound when playing because the open notes of one instrument fall onto different places on the fretboard of the second instrument. You can solo on the mandolin to get a different feel to a song simply because the open notes will be different. Or visa versa. No need to stop in the middle of a song, instant switch over.

Also, consider the smaller scaled instrument can have lighter strings to make higher notes both ring out truer and be more playable.

Well.. That's why I would do it

I know nothing about mandolins other than I nearly bought one online then purely as a coincidence saw one in person. Small! You make a couple of great points though. Short and long scale would be good and would mean I could use the same tuning so I don't get confused but they sound different. I'm easily confused. Thanks for helping.

double necks should be  purpose  built  ,  so  what  2  things  do  you   need  /  like  in a guitar ?

fretted  and a slider  ?

bass and a 3  string  ?

high  and  low  strings ?

4 and 3 ?

3 stringer and a flame thrower  ?  ;-}

just  pick  2  types  of guitars  you  like  and  you   have answered  your  own question  ..

if  building for someone else  ,  they  should  have that  answer already  .. if not  .   ask  them  what i  just asked  you  .  ;-)

You're good at this stuff Pick. A common sense, methodical approach always trumps a lack of knowledge like mine. Now you've got me thinking. Higher tuning thin strings and a two - strings bass? Guitar and a ukulele? Top three and bottom three from a six pack, regular tuning E, A, D then G, B, E for loads of incomplete standard tuning chords? Loads of lessons for standard tuning which is great for simpleton me but a bit different from run of the mill. Huge help Pick. Only problem now is I'm going to have to build more than one double neck guitar so I can have all of the above haha. Problem justified. :) Thanks my good man.

I think it's a draw bwtween a bass with higher register three - string double neck guitar and a four string guitar (which is one of the few things I haven't currently got) with a ukulele so I can play both without switching and if I ever get good enough for street performance I only need to carry one instrument. Hashtag excited!

Great to see you getting things solved!

You've actually come up with the good idea of two instruments that use a full pack of standard strings. Food for thought that one.

Thanks again Fomhorach. People like your good self and CBN definitely help solve a lot of my quandries. I'd be in an expensive minefield of hard lessons learned without ya'll for sure. Much appreciated.

;-)  most knowledge  is  2nd  hand ,  just    obtained at  different  times . we are all still  learning  ,  just at  different starting points    ;-)  and that aint  bad  , wouldn't wanna be  the first  guy  to  discover  poison berries  ;-)

Very true Pick. Living in a knowledge black out and wondering if ivy was good for dressing tyranasaur bites would be no fun at all!

apparently  , not  good for   toilet  paper  either    .  i'm  gonna  take their  word  on that  ;-)

Haha. I was thinking along the same lines but didn't like to mention it. Laughing aloud at that one.

Hello Dani & Grey Bear,
I haven't been active on this site for a while but saw your comment in my email and thought I would share some pics of one that I made a few years ago.
