if you already have a bench grinder you could make yourself a small saw bench.

there is no reason why you can't have best of both worlds.

just to give you an idea, this is what I found on ebay...

yeah but don't forget it will only cut small woods. maybe 20mm thick depending how powerful your grinder is.

a small one might be a bit weak.8" should do it.

Yes it is reasonably easy to do. There is a workbench here called 'triton' which was a very successful product, you bolt a skill saw in underneath and it makes a table saw, there's also an add-on wing which holds a router.
But.
When you get a table saw you want it to be big and heavy. The heavier the better. In my opinion the best thing to do is find an old one in your region on eBay. A big heavy bastard that can't move when you bump or shove it. Anyways, good luck with it. Bolt that sucker right down! Safety first, a guitar makes itself redundant if making it costs you a couple fingers.

Don't attempt to dick around with converting or using a powertool for a purpose that it's not intended. If anything goes wrong,  the shaft speed and torque generated will take off your fingers quicker than you'll notice whilst loosing your eye at the same time. Power tools are cheap, and you cant re-grow your fingers. Purpose-made power tools have got safety devices for a reason.

You speak true. And the moment I stop fearing a power tool is the moment I need to stop using it, let alone cobble together something like this.

It is table saws I am deathly afraid of. As I stand there, watching the blade spinning...I shut it down and find another way to do the work. Band saws are not so bad....You just have to keep focused 100% at all times. Then again....visit any butcher shop and take a look at those guys' hands....usually at least one digit missing.

I have a heathly respect for my table saw, but feel it is much safer than my radial arm saw was.  There's a jig called a shooting board.  It is easy to make, and makes a table saw much safer to use...

I use mine 2 ways:  One side has an indexing pin for my fretboard template, and I use a fretting blade.    Turn the board around and I have it set for doing dado cuts.

It is a huge time saver, and works really well.

Here's a stew-mac video on it's creation and use.

thats a great video.

I'd never want to argue with Dan Erlewine, but here we call that (a plywood jig which runs in the tracks on the saw table) a sled, and what we call a shooting board is a board with fixtures to hold the work while we shoot it with a plane.

Wayfinder, I also thought the circular saw would make a nice easy table saw conversion.

I made a small but sturdy box that the saw could slip into and then remove when needed. The first time I used it I found it to be jumpy, torquey and wanted to move around, even when clamped to the bench. Since there was no way of bolting it to the frame it aways seemed like it wanted to "jump out of the box" and go for my fingers.

I very quickly dismantled it and returned it to its original purpose. That was twenty years ago and I'm glad to say I can still count to 10 without using toes.

A light duty table saw, which is probably more effective than this mod or a circle saw mod (which scares the heck out of me thinking about) can be found as cheap, or cheaper with all the right guards and protections.

My list of tools I like to modify in the shop:

1.  Sanding blocks

Yup sanding blocks and let's see, I snapped the tip off of a reamer so I could make the required tapered hole for a banjo 5th string peg. Oh yeah, and I ground the teeth off the sides of a file that I use for frets so I wouldn't scar up the side of the neck so much. There's probably more but modding power tools is beyond my abilities.

Just get a vintage rip and a cross cut, 2 decent saw horses, square, marking guage 2 planes, its astonishing what you can achieve with that traditional set up for prepping boards. No electric needed, no noise, no danger, less kerf waste and less fine (invisible) dust.

I used to make some decent money refurbing old saws, cleaned, filed, set. A proper rip will do an inch per stroke in a 3/4 inch pine board

Very cool! I need to learn how to set and sharpen handsaws. Decent new crosscuts are available but a rip handsaw is hard to find. Truly a dying art that you should continue and pass on!
