Hi,

I had a few questions on neck finishes. I am using both red oak for the neck and red oak for the fretboard. I was thinking of staining one of the two and leaving the other natural and then finishing with tung oil. I wondered if others have done that and how was the result. I prefer using oil rather than poly but not sure if that is a good choice or not. Thank you for any advice and photos if you have them.

Thanks,
Mike

here's a   weird  alternative  far ya  ,   try   pam  cooking  spray    on  the fretboard  .   just  spray  onto a   rag and wipe  it  on  .

you  will  be stunned  at the  shine and luster    it  does  on    dark    woods  .    dries almost  instant  ,   no  residue ,  and  looks sweet  , and  is all  natural  .

BUT   ..  use the    original   plain  pam    .   not  the butter  or  olive and veg   mix  .  they  may  go    rank  in  the wood  pours .

original is  fine  tho  .

try  it   on a scrap  piece of  wood  first     , and see if  ya  like  it  ,,  because after that  ..  nothing  will  stick  to  it   and a  recoat    with  something else would be difficult  .

of the  2  ,  i'd  leave  the  neck   natural .  or  do  it  with  pam   also  ..  but  add a  light  sanding  .

just an option  ;-)

I use Tung oil.

Really seal nice gives a nice feel.

I usually use two coats i do not sand in between coats.

leaves a nice coat and really brings out the grains.

I have seen mutli coats sanded in between looks good too.

Try on a scrap piece of wood first

All my pix are tung oiled

Happy Building!!!

Thank you. I have used tung oil on other projects and really like it. Much easier than poly and I really like the finish. I like to use johnsons paste wax as well but not for something like this. It can make furniture looks beautiful though, but lots of elbow grease....

Yeah i tried the paste wax once on an early build.

did not like the smell.

I do use the paste wax for dipping wood screws into to eliminate screw head breakage and easier tightening

Yep, it is stinky. For some applications though it looks fantastic. I used it when restoring a couple of antique pinball machines I own. They are from 1934 and a little elbow grease and paste wax did wonders. I will try to share some before and after pics, not sure will work. The difference is amazing. They will never be perfect, they are 80 years old, but are lookers for their age...

I could not add the pics properly. Here are links to them. One is a Bally Signal, the other is a Stoner Super-8.

Ive tried poly, lacquer, shellac, and tongue oil. Tongue oil is my fav. Rub it in good, buff off any excess and wait 24 hours. Buff any raised grain areas with 4 ot steel wool and reapply. Usually 2 to 4 coats and results are very nice.

Very nice. Do you do it right over the fret wire or prior to putting the wire in?
Usually I do 2 coats after cutting the slots amd another 2 after installing the frets.

Great thank you!
Sorry another question (I've got plenty) about this.

Do you cut the slots
Then glue the fretboard to the neck
Then 2 coats of tung oil
Then add the wire
Then 2 coats of oil again

Or do you some how do the oil without glueing them together yet and just be careful not to get on the area to be glued?

Thanks,
Mike
I cut my slots in after I have glued the fret board to the neck. I do t know if thats right or wrong, but it works good for ME. What ever gives you good results.
Thanks Daryl. I'm not sure how I will do mine as I'm afraid I will mess up. Maybe when I'm more comfortable will try that. I just today started shaping the neck. Not perfect but for first try I'm ok with it. It is for my daughter and she liked it and thought comfortable so all good. :)
