1/4" above the box is about perfect.

Thanks Oily...for some reason it looked too high all of a sudden. I'll stick with the 1/4".

Hey thanks everyone...I've got a neck they design and I'm anchoring the strings on the tailpiece (protruding wood/neck thru piece). Should I have that piece 1/4" higher same as neck?

Best to leave it be. You want to be sure to create enough break angle on the bridge from the tailpiece so when all is done, the strings wont buzz

Fretted or unfretted?  Unfretted it doesn't matter if your string height is too high.  

For unfretted, lay your straightedge on the nut and your bridge to see about where your strings will sit...  The neck will bow just a bit, but this is a good approximation.

For fretted, I go a quarter at the first fret, 2 at the 12th (high enough to slide for me)  I think Ron goes Dime at the 1st and nickel at the 12th...
