Thanks for the reply. I don't want to put too much effort or cost into the box other than just some moisture if possible? Just seems dry.
I already own some mineral oil, tung oil and paint thinner . I'm just a bit hesitant as I don't know how the labels will react.
Here's another pic

Awesome boxes.  I've successfully used spray lacquer over labels with no issues.  I'd go flat/satin on those boxes.  They're almost too pretty to mess with!

If the box is weak, can you glue reinforcements in the corners?

I think It's more dry than weak but yeah touches of glue might help...kinda reminds me of old barn wood.
I like your idea of spray lacquer.
Careful with the soaked sponge treatment. Old wood has a tendency to warp if you expose it to too much moisture too fast. Best thing you could do is stick a bunch of unwrapped cigars in it for a year or so. ;-)

Is the wood dry or is it just unfinished? To my eye it looks a bit like those 'Edge' boxes, which are made with rough cut wood, not sanded or finished etc...

If the wood actually seems brittle and weak that would be something that needs looking at. Maybe just sand it down to 180 and whack some Danish oil on it? You probably would have to remove the label first though!

To improve the internal structure of the box you could use some bracing like this:

Bracing idea

Thank you ...that should really help..(the bracing). I don't think I'll remove the label as I think it will not go off/on without problems.
This keeps me from sanding and treating the box with some oil.... so unless I can come up with another idea I'll probably keep the box as is ...
I think the wood is unfinished but appears dry and to the touch...almost fiberous

What Richey Kay said. That looks like a rough sawn wood (not sure what kind) rather than a dried out wood. Still, there's nothing wrong with dry wood. There's a difference between dry and dry-rotted though. If there's no rot (i.e.: it's not crumbling, cracking, deteriorating, or otherwise falling apart,) it's pretty much safe to build with. As far as a finish is concerned, I wouldn't put polyurethane on the label - it's been known to turn labels white. I think you'd be okay with lacquer, shellac, or an oil finish. Rubbing that rough wood, however, might be a real chore. Some folks are having good experiences with the newer clear enamels too, but I've never tried them - I dunno how the paper labels react to it. Just my free opinion, and worth every penny you're paying for it, but I rather like it as is. If it were my build (and yeah, I know it's not,) I'd leave it as is and go for a rustic look on the neck. Naturally, YMMV...

Id like to leave as is somehow AND protect it. I know it sounds rediculous... the two are impossible without disturbing the box.. Thank you for the reply...I like the idea of a rustic neck as well.

that looks like sawn cedar, don't worry about it ,build your guitar...

not sure about soaking it in dielsel .lol

I had one of these Kristoff boxes in red that I made into a one string diddley bow.

Worst construction of any cigar box I've handled to date, out of square,  cracked, big gap between the top and side.

Sound...great! Wish I would have made it a 3 string!!

All I did was brace the top and spray it with sanding sealer.

Sanding sealer isn't glossy so it doesn't change the appearance of the wood very much but it does provide some protection.
