UPDATE ON UK CBG FEST 2010

OK guys and gals....I'm STILL getting my head organising round this years event..but it's all coming together nicely.

The staff at The Public are being very helpful in terms of press releases, laying on the PA, lighting and video stuff  - I've just been down to do a photo shoot with the local press.

LATEST NEWS
We've got Roosterman doing his "How to Build a Cigar Box Guitar" workshop, demonstrating all the stages you'll need to know about.

Cigar Box Guitar kits and parts will be available on the day, so you can pick up your supplies and get building. I'll be finalising costs on this shortly, so do bring a bit of pocket money.

I will be doing a trouble shooting workshop, so if you've got any woes regarding fretting, finishes, electrics...pretty much anything CBG related, I'll be there to try and help you sort it out.

Guitars will be available to buy on the day - if you want to exhibit your wares, let me know and I'll sort out a space for you (it free). If you are thinking of buying something, do bear in mind that most builders will only be accepting CASH..so either put a little extra folding in your wallet, or be prepared to pop out for 5 minutes to the cashpoint.

Shane Speal's & Max Shore's film "Songs Inside The Box" will be shown - it's first UK public screening.

On the Friday evening  we will be setting up at the venue, and then it's off for a drink and a bite to eat. If anyone wants to join us, either to bring in your gear to the venue or join in the night out, give me a shout.

On Sunday afternoon, my band Chickenbone Blues will be playing at the same venue, so if you are haven't gone home by then, why not take it easy, stop by for lunch and the gig?

Any suggestions, requests or problems -  do let me know.  This is a grassroots event, so I'm open to accommodating fresh ideas...just get in touch.

Prices are the same as last year- £25.00 full ticket, £5.00 evening ticket. Concession tickets for students and JobSeekers are available at £15.00 and £3.00, and I also have a very limited offer of concession all-day ticket and hotel accommodation for the Saturday night at only £20.00 - message me direct about both these deals.

The Cigar Box Nation group numbers are well up on last year (just coming up to the 200 compared to 80+ last year), so I'm anticipating a bigger turnout, but not so big as it will change the nature and vibe of the event - I still want to keep it intimate, lively....and above all FUN.

Looking forward to what you've got to pitch in....and see you on the day.

Regards

Mr Chickenbone

I think a good idea would be to have smaller teaching groups so you could have groups of four or five learning off one of the group. We could set them up into 5-10 groups which would be easier for people to follow. We could also live stream the event on the web for those who couldn't make it.
Ok, you asked so here goes....

I really liked last years informal layout, though afterwards I felt a bit guilty for letting John do all the talking. So this year, how about a few of us 'prepare' something? Maybe just 10 mins chat about something we do, or a demo? Il take half an hour to chat about something or other.

Timewise October was perfect - for those who go on holiday it was well timed between summer and xmas, so lets do that again.

If possible, it would be great to show Lesleys short CBG film, subject to consent.

Il happily donate something to be raffled again, maybe another guitar, but how about this year I do it sooner and we get some real publicity going with a charitable slant?
Which raises another point - if there will be more general public, can we somehow organise an area for us builders / sellers to display our wares? I feel with some good visual advertising at some of the 'normal' guitar shows, publicity etc, we could get a good crowd of the curious in for the evening? I know space is an issue, so how about wall hangers??

Personally as a non player Im not overly keen on going busking. I fear that a mob of 20 busking CBGers may well find themselves in the nearest 'institute' quicker than you can play 'Stairway To Heaven'..... ;o)

£25 is good with me - sure it put a few folk off last year, but there is a lot of planning and work goes into this. Id rather have the fest and pay £25 than not have any fest at all.

Last request.... Im only coming if 'Banjo Ant' is confimed as playing! :o)
Hi...I think the pressure on the venue means I'll have to look at a place where we can have couple of rooms, and generally maybe somewhere a wee bit bigger. I have a few places in mind, where there is a main performance space with stage, and a separate bar where we could split into smaller groups. If I can get a slightly bigger venue, then we'll be able to do a proper sales and display area, and it opens up the possibility of running a couple of things at the same time.

Ben - a spot arranged ahead of time would be great..I still want to keep it lively and spontaneous, but a little more preparation means we can properly programme it and people can get more out of the event.

I'm not sure what the status of the film documentary will be...there are quite a few issues regarding broadcast rights and copyright that I don't fully understand, but I'm sure Lesley will keep us posted about this.
Count me in. The outline so far sounds good. I hope I can contribute rather more than I did last year (when I had a truly awful cold). I broadly agree with Ryan about the size of groups for teaching/workshop sessions - there is definitely an optimum group size for teaching/learning (however I think it can be OK with more than 5 - maybe ten to 15 is feasible). If the number of people in a group gets a lot bigger than that then you're really into more of a presentation or demonstration situation. I think it's good to have both types of sessions but you just need to be careful with what's the most appropriate format for what you're trying to do.

I'm not sure about live streaming - apart from the risk of the technical side being an added distraction for whoever has to organise it, there's also the vague possibility that some people might decide to just watch online rather than attend, which is something we surely want to avoid. For those who really are too far away to attend (eg. our American friends) then I'm sure videos posted on YouTube after the event will provide some consolation...plus, for those like me whose playing is likely to be littered with mistakes, we can relax in the knowledge that a little judicious editing can save us from international embarrassment ;)

One thing you might want to consider on the technical side is presentation facilities - there were a couple of points last year where people were talking about really interesting stuff (pickup winders was a prime example) when it would have been enormously better if we'd had some visual depiction. Much as those involved did a sterling job of trying to explain what they'd done, it would really help matters to be able to have even a very basic illustration for talks - it doesn't have to be a Powerpoint masterpiece, just a few photos projected on a screen could make a massive difference.
any chance of getting somewhere where there is a hotel within walking/cheap taxi distance, and maybe asking for a deal with them if enough people are involved?
I'm from london but would love to come up, just the distance issue would be a problem with getting back after the evening!
Thats the main reason why i couldnt come last year!
joe
Last year some of the guys stayed at a nearby B&B (only a short stagger back from the venue)..can't vouch for what it was like!

As I haven't settled on the venue yet, it's a bit early to say how this will pan out. I'm sure people would be willing to team up to share taxis or lifts etc.
carnt wait guys gonna be good what ever you decide on!
count me in John - it was fantastic last year - I look forward to this years event.
Keep me informed.
Alan
Looking forward to the event! I think you're going to have a really great festival.

I'd be pleased to have the documentary shown at the event, I don't think there will be any problems with rights and releases at a venue at this point (unless lady luck strikes down and we get major funding! haha). I hope to also be able to do some filming and interviews at the festival if things go as planned and use the footage for the longer version of the documentary.

Just want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for your generosity and contributions to this project. Looking forward to begin editing next week.

cheers
Lesley
Mr Chicken bone I will come so long as it's not on September 11th. Getting married on that day and I figure that "The Boss" won't like if I'm not there(at the wedding I mean, not the festival) I seem to get enough grief about these things as it is.
CIGAR BOX WEDDING!! Brilliant idea.... she'll love it!! :o)
