Someone kicked the h out of your brother...Shiner Bock is a dark lager. It has low hops, medium sweetness, and isn't really as chewy like an Alt, for example.
Home brewing is easy in a 5 or 10 gallon system. Most in my alchemy brotherhood do 5 gal batches, and force carbonate them in Corny kegs.

Right now, my fave beer is Moose Drool Dark Ale from Montana.
