Thanks--I learned a lot I'd do a little differently. The top of that box is retry thick plywood, so I basically had the same concern you mentioned. If you thin the whole top, it will drop and not sit flush with the ends. What I did was draw a 1/2" border around the inside and then routed the center down to about half thickness. My f-holes are pretty small, but it puts out a lot more sound than I thought it would.

Wow, for your first build that thing looks spectacular. I hope mine looks this good. I have that exact box arriving for me any day now :) Hehe, we'll have to compare notes on how each of us did different things with the same box, and how they both sound. I'd be interested to note any differences between the two finished builds :)

Ha! Thanks. Seriously though, this project sort of fits my built in skill set. In the past I studied graphic design and metalwork and jewelry design, restored British cars, and built my own barn. Plus, I slept at a Holiday Inn Express last night--just don't ask me to do my own taxes.

Looks incredible! My first build was a drawer screwed on to a piece of banister with eyebolt tuners!
