2011 Cigar Box Guitar Builders Challenge

We are pleased to announce the 2011 Cigar Box Guitar Builders Challenge!

The contest begins immediately. The deadline for submissions is December 31, 2011. A winner will be announced the first part of January, 2012.

Unlike previous contests, there is no theme this time. It is simply Cigar Box Guitars. Note that any stringed instrument will qualify as a "guitar", so you can make a uke, dulcimer, lap steel, bass, whatever stringed instrument suits your fancy.

We will have some great prizes too, more to follow...

Contest Rules:

Each submission shall be an instrument of the builder's own construction and overall design.

The instrument shall prominently and visibly feature a cigar box in the design.

Each builder will submit up to five pictures of their creation.

Entries must be submitted no later than December 31, 2011.

Builders will post the pictures of their instruments in the "Contest Submission Thread."

Builders should include descriptions of their work, including any technical details such as features, materials used, or any other information they feel would assist the judges in reviewing the submission.

A panel of judges will review the pictures and select a winner.

The decision of the judges is final.

*** 11/20/11: Please limit your entries to one submission per person. ***

Do we sign up for this Challenge? Where? This thread maybe? Or do we just name our build thread something like Stubby's 2011 Challenge build?

Do we post a video to prove the thing works properly? Any minimal requirements?

btw I am SOOOOOOOOO in!

Folks should post their intent to participate in this thread. Once your build is complete, you should post your pictures and other information in the Submission Thread.

A video is not necessary, but you are welcome to post one if you like. There are no minimum requirements.

Crystal clear! I'm starting my hunt for a cool looking box today. IN!

What if the guitar was finished this last Friday? Can that still be used? If so am in.

That's fine.

Is there a criteria for what the Judges are looking for from the photos - i.e. most unusual, innovative, aesthetically pleasing, most technically perfect ?

how many entries per member, and do any builds made in 2011qualify?

"most unusual, innovative, aesthetically pleasing, most technically perfect"

Yes.

While we didn't specifically say in the rules that entries would be limited to 1, I think that it would make it much more fair, and easier for the judges if it was limited to just one entry.

Otherwise, someone could basically enter their entire collection.

Yes, any of your recent builds can qualify.

Count me in.

Im declaring my entry into this challenge ! I cant wait to see the entries.

Im a novice and hope my CBU gets recongnition. Im in the mist of building it now. had to put a delay on construction but ill be back building soon and will be ready to enter it by the due date.

Good luck to all

Loco

Heck, I'll throw one of mine on the pile!

I'm quite surprised that with this and other competitions in the past you only need to send pictures in and no sound clips or video of what it sounds like.

Isn't the sound the whole point?? I know some of the things people build on here are works of art, but shouldn't they sound good too??...maybe it's just me. Rant over, lol!

Dang it. I've been thinking about this challange since the Skype meeting and all this time I've been collecting bits and pieces to build with a wine box.  Going to have to back up and figure something else, but put my name down for the challange.  Thanks
