My correction...that is indeed my photo of a Virzi Tone plate. Yes, Use it, label it well, attribution etc, and thanks for asking....Bless you all

That photo is not my pic. My pic is of a modified Virzi Tone Plate. The pic I see on your page is of a basic X bracing similar to a standard guitar construction. Look for just about any luthiers website, and you will find X bracing. My Floating Sound Plate is an adaptation of the Virzi Toneplate developed by a violin company at the turn of the last century or so and was used by Lloyd Loar when building for Gibson. Do a websearch for Virzi Toneplate and you will find some great stuff and plenty to think about and inspiration, and discussion. You may use my picture of the tone plate, but please label it correctly to avoid confusion to future generations.

o.k., shakuhachi 10,000 times harder than it oughta be, but...circular breathing 10,000 times easier than you think. Whew! First step (the way I taught myself is impossible to explain, if I can figure out frikken i-movie I will post a vid in u-tube...) is, get a cup and a straw. The straw is a miniature didge. Put 1/2 inch of water in the cup. Put straw in water and blow bubbles. Puff out your cheeks (there is a reason for this) when you blow bubbles. Breath through your nose - but - take very quick sniffs through your nose when you breathe. To review - blow bubbles, quick sniffs of air through nose, cheeks puffed out. The time it takes you to fill your lungs with that quick sniff will become nearly instantaneous with practice. Second step will make that small leap to circular breathing. Practice this and we'll go to step 2 a little later. I'm loving this, the first circular breath is too cool for school!

...and yes, it can be quite intimidating to be a newbie in Nation, as I am.

So I researched for months, everything didge, and I settled on bamboo as raw material - spent 2 years experimenting with bamboo in curing and preservation process - built my own bamboo tools from steel tubing I found in dumpster and also tools made from bamboo. I was building didges with sculpted mouthpieces (because I didn't know any better) and I did not like beeswax mouthpieces. Spent 10 years perfecting nearly indestructible didges (no cracking) and rebuilt a few eucalyptus didges from Australia. Taught myself how to play. I conducted workshops at the best instrument store in L.A. - McCabe's - because no one else was doing it - for 4 years, did a few private lessons. I can say with confidence that I build the finest and most beautiful didgeridoos that I have ever seen or played, if I can figure out this frikkin digital camera I will post pictures. (to be continued)

O.k., mate, I forgot to mention that my bamboo journey began in '96 when I awoke from a dream that commanded me to obtain and play a didgeridoo - and I did not know what a didgeridoo was! So I started scouring L.A for a didge, found a woolybutt-termite-hollowed didge from your side of the planet for $600 ! I had $30. No computer, time to hit the library...(to be continued)

Is this the right place to reply? I'm rather new at this. No, I don't have plans for shakuhachi, but there are amazing resources out there in googleland, and many amazing players down under, building a decent shakuhachi is the most challenging thing I've ever done - about 200 hours apiece. I'll get back to you on this.

Hi Brian
I've taken a couple of photos for you. It is basically the wiring diagram I use to wire up my guitars. I just finished soldering up my 3rd build and had no dramas so it seems to be working good for me!

The coloured-in wires on my diagram are just normal speaker wire I had spare of. If you look closely at the photo you should be able to work out what's going on. I think the most important part is making sure both the black wire from the piezo and the speaker wire are both touching the base of the volume put via a good amount of solder. Kinda hard to explain it but like I said the pic and diagram should help you out a bit. I found if you bend the 3rd tab slightly in towards the control pot it's easier to get the wires and solder to all sit together and touch the base of the control pot.
I bought the volume control pot from that Luthier Supplies web site I showed you. Its a 500 ohm standard control pot.
Hopefully I've been some help to you mate!
Oh and best wishes for you and your wife I hope everything works out fine for you!
Take it easy
- Steve

Hey Brian
I've been buying my parts off Australian Luthier Supplies. The address is http://www.luthierssupplies.com.au/
All you should need is:

1 x Standard Control Pot 500 Ohm -
http://luthierssupplies.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=141_63_307&products_id=494

1 x 1/4 Mono Jack -
http://luthierssupplies.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=141_63_310&products_id=517

1 x Knob to cover the top of the control pot - Just go to "knobs" and choose whichever one you like the best.

All this with the Piezo element (I use the audio transducer from Jaycar) and you should be up and running mate. Hope this helps ya out, any questions just hit me up !!

Hey Brian. Its a piezo pickup wired to a volume pot. I wasn't sure what it would be like having a Piezo without a volume control (feedback etc). Hope this helps!!
