Ted, I like the look of your stonehenge pups and being an (ex) telecoms engineer would love to have a go at making my own for my three stringers. Can you give me some basics like what type of magnets, wire guage and how many turns needed. I appreciate you sell them and might not want make this public though. Won't be offended if you prefer not to discuss them. Thanks

Thats a great guide indeed. Would anyone share some instructions on how to use the calculator or something else as the round counter?
hey Ted.
I'm wondering, when winding a pup, which end is the "hot" end?
the end that you start with or end with?
Thought it was about time to show y'all what i've been up to...

I did this a few months ago but have only just got around to uploading pics. The first pic shows the whole board. On the left is 42 swg wire. The winder uses a modified hand drill mounted in wood blocks. On the chuck is a small piece of wood with double sided tape on. This holds the bobbin. Also on the edge of this is a magnet - a spare polepiece. On the post underneath is a reed switch. I wired this into the equals button on the calculator. Type in 1 + = and then it counts each revolution as I wind.

I wound about 4000 turns on this first pickup. Resistance is low (~few k) but i ran out of space on the bobbin! I'll probably wrap it in waxed string before mounting it. The pickup certainly works but i haven't mounted it in a guitar yet - sound file to follow when I do.

It's been great fun getting this together. Think my next will be a 3-string P90 style!

Nice pup considering it is your first.
Where do you get purpleheart in the UK?
Hi Hogs
I bought some purpleheart from John Boddy's. They sell it in neat blocks for wood turning. Ideal if you want some for pickups:

Thanks for the info Joebud.
Only just seen your reply so better late than never. I will have a look

Thanks again for some great info. Don't know why the hyperlink function doesn't work here. This was the wire I found.

Hi,
The magic number for pickup wire gauge is 42. The maplin stuff only goes down to 40 swg - not sure whether this would be ok (it's only 0.025mm wider), but you can get 50g of 42 swg from wires.co.uk for £6 which is what i did.

Incidentally, the purpleheart came from my local jewsons.

I would like to build a DanElectro lipstick style pickup for a three string guitar. Does any one have any suggestions of the best materials and info of how many winds to get me in the ball park to start this project.
Thanks
"Charlie"
