I built the magnetic coil tester yesterday, took me about 10 minutes. I'll post some pix on my page today. The coil I tested worked best when only 4 mm ( 1/4 inch) below the strings, useful to know when it eventually gets into a CBG.

ROTFL. Dang, that sounds SO much like an "Alan Roberts stunt."

Anyhow Papa, get yourself a tuning fork. If your magnetic pickup doesn't ring like a bell with a tuning fork over it, you know you have issues. I use my fork to test boxes before buying. It's helped me avoid some real dogs.

Where was that amp hum coming from?
Comment by PapaSimone on May 31, 2011 at 3:33pm
I plugged in again and thought "that's weird" I'm not even getting a hum from the amp. Then heard the hum but it was coming quietly four feet away from my amp, on my work bench. Of course in this time I took the top off of the box and took a look inside. All looked good.

do share. You may end up helping somebody else who may be too afraid to ask.

So I have solved my "pick-up" isn't working problem. I do believe that I might just win the dumb a** of the year award.

You can test the pickup before installing by connecting it to an amp and tap it with a screwdriver. If it's ok you should hear the taps pretty loud. You can also measure the resistance with a multimeter. If it reads no resistance the coil wire is broken. If it reads a value it's ok.

You could  take the magnetic pick up, before you put it in the CBG and  test it on any metal strung guitar, plug it into you amp and wave it i=over the striggs as you strum the, It should pick up the sound. This will give you a good idea of the best space between the strings and the pick up, too much and the  magnetic field will be too weak to get the best out of the set up.

You could also build a very simple test ring,  with a plank of 2 x1 , and a single guitar string, next time I get 5 minutes free I'll have a go and post it on line.

So I got my first 3 string all strung up and it sounds pretty good  but then I plugged in and....nothing.

Back to the drawing board.  This is a magnetic pick up.  Is there a way to tell if a magnetic pickup is working before stinging the guitar?  I could always tell if my peizio pickups were working before hand by just knocking on them.
