think most of the fun comes from thinking the design through, figuring what might work and then doing it to see if those hunches were correct. Learning by your mistakes too.

Copying fret positions isn't cheating and if you have  floating bridge you can adjust things BEFORE you cut the frets in.

At the top of this page just under the black there is a brown line of sites. The 3rd one over will get you to some plane that might be helpfull. As for the fret spacing, I cheated. I layed my neck next to a squire guitar & marked the lines.

Good luck,

Oscar.

T.O.

It's been done, I've done it... mix results...  mostly wound pup in neck position and piezo in/under bridge.  Let me put it this way... if you're going for simple, easy, vintage CBG vibe, a simple piezo disc is way to go...if you are also willing to accept the limitations of tone quality and feedback potential.  If you are looking more for electric guitar tone quality go for wound/guitar pickup.  If you do both, put in a 3way switch.  You will probably be in one or the other... rarely both.

just my experience.  hope it helps,

the best,

Thanks for the comment Wichita Sam...the next question is to go with a Piezeo that I would have to buy or a an old guitar pickup that I have...never used a piezeo before...been looking here for a comparison ...that is someone that has both installed on one instrument...Hummm I may have answered my own question...I could put both in one instument...anyone tried that?

Alan, I put 3 strings on it.Just my second attempt at a CBG, the first was with oak and went well enough for a first run. I plan on using oak or maple for the necks from now on  and then laminating them to get the fret board closer to the strings. This one right now I am going to add a spine to it and see if that helps me any.

Mike Whisenhunt, how many strings do you have on that thing?

If all you have is poplar, you can hedge your bets by laminating it, maybe with a contrasting skunk stripe to make it purdy. I've built with maple and walnut and had no problems. I don't like oak for necks because it has such open pores you have to use a filler to get a fine finish.

Tony, welcome to your new addiction... Seriously, it doesn't matter that much... go with something you're comfortable with.  For "guitar" anything between 24 -25 1/2 is fine.  I've done everything from 10 inch canjos up to a full scale upright bass CBG.... Start with the familiar and work outward...

take pics, let us see what you do....

the best,

Wichita Sam

Hi Folks,  ...this is my first post on this forum...I just finished a "Back Packer" 6 string guitar and have just discovered the CBG Nation and completely heads over heels to build one...but I have a question on what is the most popular scale that folks are using...my 'Back packer" I used 23 3/4" my old Gibson is 24 3/4...my old 4 string Bass guitar was 30" ...so where do you think I should measure to for the scale...?

Ive always heard poplar is a good wood to use too. So I guess its a good oak or nothing.

Learned a valuable lesson tonight: No matter how nice the neck looks when the frets are burned in and you get a clear coat on it, if it's made from poplar it's gonna bow when ya string it. Buddy brought it to me to build from...FAIL.
