Hi guys
Sorry for asking about pickups again, but try as I might I cannot find the info Im sure I read on here last week!
Im about to add a single coil to the current build, but I quite like the box as is, without a pickup spoiling the clean lines, so....
I wondered if I could dismantle the strat style coil and somehow re-wind it so that more of the poles stick up out the top - allowing the pick up to be mounted UNDER the lid, with holes drilled through for the poles only (so from the outside all thats visible is 4 (or 6) shiny metal poles - no plastic surround). I think this would look neat, but not sure if it would work?
Im sure if my pickups arrive before there's an answer Il have a go anyway, but itd be nice not to ruin them all!!
Cheers

You shouldn't need to rewind. Are the poles on the pickup screws? Just take them out and replace with longer (steel) screws.

If they're not screws, you can still extend by just attaching an iron or steel extension to each pole. You could probably drill a pilot hole in the pole and screw in a steel screw. Or, if you have the tools, thread the hole and use a bolt.
Never wound a pup, not even in a dream!
So on that basis, Il try first by doing nothing and seeing if they are strong enough... if that fails then I think Il try the Docs remedy and extend the poles - unfortunately they are not screw type.
Thanks for the pointers guys, Il keep you posted :o)
good question. i am doin the same thing as you, and this is what i have found works. i get p-bass pups from guitarpartsusa.com for 14 bucks. i also get their 688 long mag poles. take the magnets and the poles off the p-bass pups and put the new pole magnets in. i also rought out some of the box top where the pick-up will go to get the poles the height i want them. on a three string i have glued a nail over the poles. i hope some of this helps. i might take some picks and send them to ya if you want. good luck, if you have more questions just ask.
I like the 'gluing a bit extra on' train of thought - its another little piece that can be customised and I like that. A pic for the group would be great too!
Don't be afraid to try winding your own. It's not that hard.

half of a p-bass pup with longer mag rods and more winds added and shielded with copper tape.

Thanks, that looks like a pretty straight forward route :o) Il have a play with these ideas and let you know what transpires...
