Sorry for the late reply! Thanks for the comments all! The crackle is a tricky thing. With much experimentation this is what works for me. Crackle paint from the store is expensive and I don't think it works any better than my method.

Step one: Lay on a thick layer of wood or elmers glue. Let it thicken slightly, but it should still be wet for the second step.

Step two: lay on (lightly) a thick layer of tempera paint. Tempera paint is inexpensive and is not elastic like acrylics. It really gives you the crackle look.

Step three: Dry the paint for a more crackle look. The reason for the crackle is the top layer of paint dries before the glue. I like to use a hair dryer to increase the effect. Don't forget to use contrasting colors to make the crackle really pop or similar colors for a more subtle effect.

Step four: Touch up missed areas with a brush. Tempera paint is a bit fragile. I user a thin layer of poly over the top to hold the paint down and to seal things up.

Yea, so, how do you get the crackle look on the paint?  Vaseline first, then paint?
