Just make sure you use enough inner bracing for the extra stress from bigger gauge and longer scale strings. Don't want the box to start folding up on you.
Hi all, from Merry England comes a question, is there any pitfalls one could blunder into with building a Baritone Resonator Cigar Boxish Guitar, probably a three string version...???
A couple of springs inside the box running from under the bridge to the neck end of the box will add some natural reverb for a nice effect.
I put mine under the through neck in the bridge position I have found a richer sound that way and very little feedback I find to much lid noise the other way while playing . Good luck in your method you choose . Again no rules in CBGs
I tend to go right to the lid most times too Pick. I use two-part necks now though where I cut the through stick off with about four inch overlap outside the box. I'll then go over cautious and use five wood screws to attach the neck to the through stick. I've found I can then mount my neck lower down in the box, still have the full thickness of the through stick without needing to reinforce or cut out the through stick to get a magnetic pickup in. Even after doing this I'll still put s sliver of wood between the box top and the through stick which means I'm half of the camp that goes neck to the top (where the strength is needed under the bridge) and half space camp. I guess?
I’ve built both ways- my first was glued, the rest not- and I can’t tell the difference - I don’t glue to the top anymore personal preference. I’ve noticed the box itself can make a major difference in sound.
*mag pup.
Bear , i'm in the" glue right to the lid" camp. no space . it seems like im in good numbered company (as supplied link in post below dictates )
I've even seen prominent builders who swore by leaving a space , convert to the glued to lid camp.
sound aside .. there are other factors to consider .. " how long before the lid spoons " with a space ?" "does it even matter much with a mah pup" .. etc etc ...
Great post Pick, and I fully agree. I think you have to build both ways and see which way you like best. The bad news is you have to build at least two guitars to find out. The good news is you get to build two guitars to find out.
Let's face it though, you're never going to only build one guitar anyway. This game is as addictive as it gets!
Best of fortunes with the build(s) Chris.
Bear :0)
Chris ..
This topic comes up alot ,, and you will have some folks say a space between the lid and neck is better .. others say glued right to the top is better and the whole guitar is solid and vibrates . .
and in another thread ,( almost as in a perfect world ) , someone that actually built 2 guitars the same , same box, scale , and all , except one with a space, and one without , said .. he really couldn't tell the difference but leaned on the solid glued right to the lid sounding, and feeling better .
so there's your "hummmm" answer for the day . ;-)
