Sorry for the delay getting back, Frank!  Toothpicks are great and easy to use.  I use round (Diamond brand, I think?)  Just stay away from using the tapered ends.  I glue them down directly on the marked location with wood glue (like Titebond, that I use for building anyway)..  I think some folks use superglue, but wood glue is fine.  Once dry, it's a simple matter to cut off the overhanging ends, and dress the ends with a sanding block.  I've heard of folks giving them a goat of glue (wood or super) to make them a bit stronger and wear resistant.  Don't know how much that would help?   Easy enough to do, regardless!

Hey Gary, Very nice work! Can you tell me about toothpick frets? I'm planning my 3rd build, a canjo, and wanted to try fretting for the first time. I'm going diatonic and already bought traditional supplies but I'm intrigued by the idea of toothpicks. Seems much more authentic. Are they difficult to install?

Dave - I got the striping idea from YOU!  LOL!  (You're welcome!)

Thanks Brothers!   It seems it can never be as simple as a soup can and tooth picks!  I felt like the slot head was necessary to help jazz it up a bit, plus I seemed to have an odd one lying around.  I especially like striped fret boards on the diatonic fret layouts.  Appreciate the kind words!
