After joining this forum in 2014, I finally have my 1st CBG which my wife bought for me at the weekend (a 4 string from Frethound Custom Guitars). I was never going to get around to building one. Now…Continue

Just finished my 1st freeless acoustic CBG, based on the #Glenn Watt design. 31inch neck, 25inch scale, 42/32/24 gauge strings. Sycamore neck and a 200mm x 180mm x 45mm box made from 7mm ply. Neck…Continue

Hi, I'm HazelFyrebird, and I'm a wannabe luthier (I feel like I'm standing up at a Builder's Anonymous meeting...) in Virginia. I'm a bit of a lurker, as I've been reading and reading for a while,…Continue

This is not so much of a reintroduction as a rebirth so to speak. I joined Cigar Box Nation many, many years ago when I initially developed an interest in more "primitive" instruments, CBGs, mountain…Continue

Welcome to all newcomers here, make new things, take our mistakes, make it better ;) there's no rules - as you should know - unless the frets/necklenght. visit our pages and ask! we will answer if we (i) can. I can't build as mutch as I would like, but when you start, there's always something you haven't tried yet ;) The most important (for me) is the share!
Welcome to the addiction Christian. Lots of info in the Essential pages at the top right of the page. Everybody here is eager to help with any questions.
Hello, Love to play my 1 slide 3 string I recently played. Basic make. Now I am making an electric but am trying to figure some parts out. Totally enthused about the whoe cigar box guitars. I also play 6 string guitar. Love that there is site like this. thanks.
@Marinie Toman To build a traditional 3 & 4 string CBG there are not really any rules but there is advice. First thing I consider is the scale I'm using so that I can get an idea the length of box and neck. I like a 25.5inch scale myself. Do you want to fret your strings or play strictly slide or both.(this will determine string height above frets or fret-less if you are just using a slide. Kits are also a great way to go for a beginner, this way you see most of the pr-measurements from the get go. My first CBG was a 6 string I salvaged from a used squire. Best advice is to just dive in! Welcome and good luck.
My advice? Build stuff. Make mistakes. Build more stuff, make different mistakes. Keep on building stuff and making mistakes until you're halfway good, then keep building stuff. Attached are pics of my tenth build. Note weird angle of sixteenth fret and positively steampunk headstock- both mistakes. But it plays like an absolute b*st*rd, and that's what counts.
Building more stuff even as I sit here...image.png
Hi, thanks for adding me, I'm an Irish Traditional musician, i play a number of instruments but never a CBG. I've just started to build one and could do with a bit of advice as i go along. I hope it's OK to post a few pics as i build it. I'm enjoying the discussion's, video's etc. I will try to put a video up of the CBG that i build and maybe you could let me know if if going in the right direction, Thanks again.
That's awesome E.Z., A Sledge Hammer Handle would work well for this since they are straight and made of Hickory.
Welcome to CBN.
Couple of nice V's too.
Very cool, Easy! I'd love to hear your axe handle CBG.
Hi folks. Just finished a little project, an axe-handle-cigar-box guitar... Wasn't really planned, I wanted to make a body out of a first-aid kit box, but then I found this little cigar shop in town and they gave me a ton of boxes... It turned out much better than I hoper for and then I checked out this website and got a ton of new ideas to build...
I was very lucky to get the ideal-size cigar box (Romeo y Julieta, Havana Cuba) that fits neatly into my flying V suitcase together with my "regular" guitar, so I don't need another case for it. This simplifies things a lot as I can go on a gig with two suitcases instead of 3.
As soon as I do some gigs with it and shoot a video or two I'll post some more... but sofar I'm impressed. The "nexk", made out of an axe, is strong enough not to bend or flex, and it makes the guitar basically a neck-through and the sustain is unbelievable, better than my Gibson. And I beefed it up with two mean-as-it-gets Alnico 5 humbuckers and it pulls like a train.
Be careful of kits. They aren't all the same when it comes to quality pieces of wood, parts and fitment issues. Always check the reviews first. If you get one, look everything over and check for fitment/alignment issues first.
Welcome Tim.
