I'm sure I just answered my own question about tuners, but I am going to ask anyway. I have yet to build my 1st CBG, and I am getting my supplies together. I have been wondering if the economy tuners from CB Gitty will work for me. I am a guitar player and know first hand what its like to play with tuners that fall out of tune. I could step up to Hipshot tuners but by the time I do this, I will have more wrapped up in tuner costs that the guitar itself. So, what kind of experiences have you all had with these tuners and would you be able to recommend them or  a better option. Thanx to you all.

I love the look too, thank you for your input Don Craig, Much appreciated. Tim

I favor econo tuners as they are half the price of enclosed tuners. I have bought bulk from china and from CB Gitty. CB gitty has better quality control. I get a great price buying direct from china in bulk, but one in 25 is bad, and sometimes I can take 3 bad ones and make a good one.,for first builds and small quantities I say go with CB Gitty., shipping time from china varies greatly depending on the service the seller uses.,and some sellers close for a month around chinese new year.,,.

Thank you Jerry Jordan, I have decided that you all have had really good luck with the economy tuners, and I will too I am sure. I am wondering how you buy from china in bulk? I wouldn't even know how to do this and from who! I will admit I am getting excited to get going on my 1st build.Thank you Tim

Gitty's tuners have all worked well for me.

Unless you see the knobs actually rotate backwards or the string slip around the capstan it's not the tuners that are the problem.  the hole in the headstock needs to be sized right for the tuner to support it and not let it bind in a too tight or torque out of shape in a too loose hole.   the set screws do not need to be gorilla tight, their only job is to stop the tuner from backspinning in the hole, they need a pilot hole and screwed down till seated, not torqued.   Then the slot in the nut needs to not bind on the strings which is most tuning problems.  If the string doesn't move easily across the nut then the tension on either side of the nut will be unbalanced and slowly equalize as you play.  finally there needs to be at least 3 wraps of string around the capstan to have enough friction to hold the string (or as close to 3 as the thicker strings will allow) or the string can slide backwards through the hole.

Thank you for your input JL, and your tips on good tuning. I will surely make sure to drill properly and take care in the string wrapping. Thanx. Tim

Hi, I have found that the most common failure in tuners is wear. The cog/gear on the post, wears out or a tooth will break. So time will tell.

Taff.

Thanx taffy evans, much  appreciated. TimTim

The Gitty economy tuners have been good for me.  I will say that I bought some black closed tuners on ebay and while they look good, none of them worked well and several have failed.

Thank you Uncle John ! I look forward to making my first CBG

The exposed and capped tuners have been 50-50 for me. The sealed tuners have been great and without issue.

+1 on this comment

I won't use any China made open tuners after holding a few in my hand, difference between a smart car and a Hummer in quality compared to most Japan or US made tuners, I'll use cheap sealed tuners on 3 strings or less, but anything else gets better. And HeII no on eye bolts, what a pain.

hello richard dean, I have seen the eye bot tuner idea, and I did think it was strange, but then again its resourceful no doubt about that. I have watched a small documentary on Matt Isbel and he makes really cool guitars. I am torn at the moment on making a true to the history CBG or add the modern touch such as the strat style bridge . I am still in the research mode at the moment. next is figuring out fretboard flush or above the box lid. so more research to do. thanx for all your input . tim
