I was so shocked to see that Dolores O'Riordan, the lead singer of The Cranberries, passed away today at only 46. I've listened to her sing for countless hours on repeat. The Cranberries hit BIG while I was in high school, and I loved them! Last summer I put Linger on a list of songs I wanted to learn on cigar box guitar. In tribute to Dolores, today I learned it. This is a quick cell phone recording with no bells and whistles. I had to modify the intro and outro to make it work on CBG. I have no delusions about having a wonderful singing voice, but this is me with what I got goin' on today enjoying making music with a guitar I built. Thank you Dolores O'Riordan for sharing your music with the world! You brightened my days. I'm sad you are gone.

Glad you enjoyed those links Janis, I spent most of yesterday in my work shed listening to Dolores and the Cranberries, and when Ave Maria rolled round, despite my supposed rough exterior and personality, I'm not ashamed to say, a tear or two did roll down my cheek  :-)

I'm afraid I've fallen behind in responding here. Maddog, Pick, & AGP - thank you guys. It makes me feel very connected to know all the different people who loved and appreciated her voice along with me. Her singing touched so many people. To your point Pick, music can bring us together despite all kinds of differences. That is truly a great thing - makes me want to build and play & put even more time into music. Maddog, I agree Chris Cornell had an epic voice too. Gone way too soon. :( AGP thank you for those links - really beautiful.

Dave, Dano, Bruce, & Smilingdog - thank you! I didn't expect this to connect with many people. I'm touched that it did! Thank you for the kind words. It really means a lot to me. I'm very encouraged to keep playing (and singing - gah!).

A lovely tribute to undoubtedly one of the best female voices I've ever heard, like Maddog being some 20+yrs older than Dolores I loved then and still listen to the Cranberries often.

If anyone has any doubts about the unique quality of her voice I have put 2 Utube links of my favourite Dolores song "Ave Maria", one studio version by herself and one with Pavarotti, Enjoy :-)

Very well done. Both you and your guitar sound great.

It is sad  that in this  day and age , real "News"  is "trumped" by "he said / she said"  remarks and arguments .  And news worthy events such as this  get bumped  and foreshadowed by BS.

Sadly, many of us only  hear of a passing of a celeb,  artist, etc , through social media . and even then  , we have to check to see if it is real news   and not a hoax etc .

but when great folks like you use the social media platform to do such a beautiful heartfelt tribute , and folks acknowledge it as such . it proves there is hope for some of us yet .

Very well done , and a great emotionally expressed  tribute .

just beautiful.

Wonderful Tribute Janis! Very well done and from the heart, your singing is beautiful!

Being a tad older than you I was a 70's teen and hard rock child, I was into the Seattle bands in the late 80's early 90's but there was something about the Cranberries music that grabbed my attention at that time. Dolores O'Riordan 's singing was just so unique. When Chris Cornell of Soundgarden passed recently it really struck a chord with me as his voice was one of those that comes along once in a lifetime. Dolores was one of those voices also and will be missed.

Thanks Vinnie!

Andies, thank you. I always felt that song had so much emotion wrapped up in it. I've loved it for years. When it came out I played bass but not guitar. I used to play bass along with this whole album. Now I'm playing it on a different kind of 4 string. :) That license plate is from my home town & last registered the year I graduated high school. Lots of connections. Keep smiling, my friend!

Aw, thank you Uncle John! I'm very shy about my singing, but some songs pull it out of me.

Thanks you guys for taking the time to leave me notes. It makes me feel more comfortable sharing music. I'm very shy about my singing. I'm so glad this is connecting.
