This could be git related or not. So, what's on your workbench at the moment?

I have 4 scarf joint necks in different stages of work.

A 25" scale pine 5 string neck for a Banjo-Res, A 25" scale Red Oak neck for my 6 string Strat-Res build, A 24 & 1/2" scale Red Oak neck for my 6 string Double Cut Tele build and a 27" scale 6 string Baritone Conversion neck for a Modern Strat body I have.

I've been wondering about them, I've heard mixed reviews. Guess I'll just have to try them out myself.

Having played this a bit more I can now say that with this wired for only a single volume, the tone is very bright and clean. It doesn't have any crunch, but it has power.

I wonder what it would sound like wired through a switch to use both rails in humbucker style. Might have to try it on a future build.

In the meantime, I like what I have from this one.

You mean to be able to switch between series/parallel? That would be easy if they are 4 wire pickups. Do they have a magnet underneath between the rails?

Paul,

It is a four wire pickup. This one has the two incoming wires together, and is wired to a single volume as I said before. It dos have a magnet on the bottom of the rails. I picked it up thru Amazon . Check one out. For the price, you can beat it.

I have a friend in Ukraine that winds pickups and he just sent me a 3 Strat pickup set that I should be getting soon. They have Neodymium magnets and sound awesome. Can hardly wait til they get here. Here's 2 videos of him testing the pickups.

They sound nice. I have made a couple of three pole pickups and a blade style using the neodymium magnets. They give a very bright sound

I've noticed that pickups with ALNICO magnets tend to have heavy midrange which is great for attitude/grit, but can sound muddy sometimes. The Ceramic pickups have a midrange scoop and have more pronounced highs and bass, but loose the attitude. The Neodymium magnets seem to have equal levels of all three giving you good clean tone, but also able to deliver the attitude. I am really turning into a fan of pickups with these magnets.

Hey Paul. You sound like you know what you are talking about. I have a pignose and use it with an electric 3 string and an electric accoustic 3 string. Sounds pretty crap with full electric. Any good effects boxes suitable to try for a delta blues sound?

Cheers

Michael

I'm good at fooling people into thinking that. ;)  I've been playing since 1977 and working on/building guitars since 1984 so I've learned a thing or two along the way.

Not everybody likes the sounds from a Pignose Amp and I think it's because of the small cheapy speakers they use. I'm not a fan of small speakers. They sound farty to me when distortion is used. I really like a speaker to be at least 8" diameter, they move more air and have a more dynamic sound. A speaker will either make or break the sound of your amp.

Don't know what pickups your using or if you using round piezos so a little more info on that and what value pots/caps your using is needed.

Effects: I love the Boss Blues Driver pedal. The Psycho Knob that C.B.Gitty sells is probably good with the right amp and speaker(most of the demos are done with little speakers that I'm aware of). The Fulltone OCD is a great overdrive pedal, TC Electronics Flashback is a great Delay pedal, Fulltone Clyde Wah Wah pedal, the old FuzzFace pedal, Electro-Harmonix H9 Harmonizer and the Cathedral Reverb pedal are all great to have. And a MXR Phase 90 or 95.

I have four builds I am working on. attached is a picture of the necks.

looking good so far Dave.

I got back to work on my Bo Diddly git. I had to add some wings to the neck inside the box since I would need to cut through the neck for pickups. The neck is Red Oak and I wanted to use the same, but I didn't have any extra pieces.

My wife calls me a pack rat for good reason, I got a 1957 Motorola turntable in a yard sale that didn't work about 2 years ago. Why did I get it, a tube amp inside and a 15" speaker to make a bass amp for myself. Had the wood cabinet leftover. Most of the wood is Pine and Poplar, but it's seasoned wood that's at least 60 to 65 years old.

Got a piece of Pine off the cabinet that just happened to be big enough to cut for both side wings. So now it's on to the fretboard.
