Thanks for the input Mark. I usually don't post vids of my failures but now I might have show my less than satisfactory homemade bow attempt. It does work but it's ugly and hard to use. That'll come soon. As for the banjo - here's the original demo vid with a few more details.

Brad, making a bow that functions well is far trickier than one might expect. I would have to concur that buying a beginners level bow, (or better) is a wise place to start.

If your heart is really set on learning to make bows. I would suggest starting with the art of re-hairing some old bows, and learning about bow tension etc until you have a pretty good grasp on what it takes to achieve success.

Creating a playable box fiddle is also a bit of a challenge, and though there are potential pitfalls, a little success can be very satisfying IMO. Getting a narrow waist for bow clearance, and high enough bridge for good pressure on the top seem to be the most overlooked or unexpected obstacles. Follow Jim's lead, he's overcome these and more.

Now on to that Banjo, Jim, we need more info on that project. Sounds great!

Oops Brad, that link didn't work but if you search Cigar Box Violin Plans on CBN you'll find some.

Thanks Brad. I've made a few bows in past with mixed results. I usually use an inexpensive one  (less than 20 buck) off ebay. Haven't electrified a fiddle yet, usually just mike it if needed. There are real good plans available on this site Here's one I used a couple of years ago

Thanks RTZ. In spite of it all I remain hopeful. I just hope no one starts finding music from the South during a certain time period to be offensive.
